So, on 20/01/17 CBS settled with the guys making Axanar, the fan Star Trek movie.

http://www.axanarproductions.com/captains-log-jan-20th-2017-cbs-lawsuit-settles/

The main jist of the settlement is that this movie will be made and the studio won't get a lawsuit hammer on their head for it. However, they can't do their original 100 minute movie, they get a maximum of 30 mins total to make the movie which they are planning to split into 2 15 min episodes to take advantage of the style that got them such aclaim with the prelude episode that they released, which, I have included in the post below.

As well as that, all donator perks will be fulfilled to the best of their ability, so, if you donated then you will get the DVDs or Blu Rays that were included in your perks. However, aside from that, no disk formats of the movie can be produced or sold under the terms of the settlement.

So, yeah. After 13 months of lawsuit worries and tension over whether this is going to be made, Axanar will be able to be produced.

Out of curiosity, given how they ran out of money months ago how the hell are they going to accomplish anything?

Though on the bright side with their reputation tarnished due to their incompetence even once this project is done they'll never manage to get funding for another, and they certainly won't be entering the industry as professionals. Too bad they had to burn the community so damn hard while they did though.

They have a good CG artist(s), and good actors...

But the animation and story is horrible. The ships are always waaaaay too close together and it ruins everything.

So yeah, decent for being fan made I suppose... I'm not exactly eager for more.

100 minutes to 30? Ouch. I've seen low budget TOS-themed fan episodes that have been longer. To say my interest level has dipped from this news is an understatement.

Would you mind filling me in? I haven't really followed the development side of Axanar besides the lawsuit, so I don't know the sordid details.

The entire reason the project was being done, and the reason they ran out of money (building a studio instead of renting one) was because they wanted to get into film production professionally and used Axanar as a means of getting their foot in the door. It failed spectacularly and they've effectively locked themselves out of the industry.
