BBC > world wide programming.
Sure, we have to pay tax for it, but that's why it's so good.

Eh, they show Top Gear, Dr. Who and Russell Howards Good News.
I quite like them for that, personally.

I absolutely love their documentaries. David Attenborough's voice puts me to sleep ever so gently lol.

Those f***ers are blocking me from watching british comedy. May they burn somewhere painful!

I want my Horrible Histories, David Mitchell and Armstrong and Miller!

I don't know anything about the BBC other than that they are blocking me from certain videos on youtube and content on their site.

What's the deal with not all of the shows being on the Mobile version of iPlayer. Particularly Radio shows? I want to listen to Guards! Guards! on my iPhone sitting outside, or on a walk in the country, or while doing the ironing.

Looking at their entire history then the only other company that has provided anywhere near the same ammount of high-quality television is HBO and that's without taking into account their News output. The BBC has alot of problems but for me they've earned the license fee for as long they contiue to operate.

In fairness they do produce a lot of quality programming specifically in nature, history(A History of Celtic Britain which was on for the last 4 weeks was excellent),drama and comedy. Some of there sports coverage too is very good(football coverage is a bit bland though). No advertising too is a massive plus

However they also produce their fair share of shit too.The majority of the programmes on BBC3 are pure shite

Match of the Day! :D

But really, I don't think the programs on the BBC are any better or worse than any other channel, but it has one seriously important advantage - no adverts.

The bbc is pretty awesome IMO, its a pain in the ass that you have to pay for the licence but I think its worth it.

Being a filthy stinking foreigner, I know little about the BBC besides that their news is probably one of the best stations out there.

Okay here a question for you guys, wtf is this license stuff. I first heard of it when voicing my opinion on how shitty it was UK got the Doctor Who games for free but everyone else had to pay for them. It's a cable channel isn't it, so shouldn't it just be part of the monthly cable bill?

I catch BBCA and BBC World News over here in the states but I have to pay extra to catch them, is that what you guys are talking about?

The best on Earth, that's what it is.

Almost-unparalleled news coverage. Aims to be completely unbiased, and is scrutinised closely as such.

Unparalleled documentaries.

Ten TV Channels. BBC America, Canada, Kids, Entertainment, lifestyle, Knowledge, the whole UKTV network (including Dave), People+Arts, Animal Planet, BBC Persian. BBC 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, News 24, Parliament, One HD, HD, CBBC. The BBC also helps pay for channel 4.

Ten Radio channels, not including all the local stations; or, The World Service. BBC Radio 1, 1+, 2, 3, 4, 4+, 5, 5+, 6, Asian Network. Local stations and, again, the World Service. Our stuff is so good we give it out for free. =P

Everyone who owns a colour TV in the UK has to pay £145.50 per year for it. That's about £12 a month- much less than a decent sky package. That's what funds most of the BBC. It's a state-funded corporation (omg socialist!!). The World Radio Service is free everywhere, everything else may or may not be free depending on where you are.

In Britain every household hast to be £145ish a year ($240 USD) to own a television that receives signal. If you want you can jump through a ton of hoops to prove you can't get a signal but really it's not worth it, and chances are you do anyway.

The TV licence fee goes towards the fact that there is 0 external advertising on the channel, which is awesome imo, especially since the majority of the programmes I watch are on the beeb.

It differs from a cable bill in the way that it is essentially a tax and therefore mandatory. If I want cable or digital, I would need to pay for Sky (essentially TiVo) on top of that, which is between £30 and £60 ($50 to $100 USD) a month on depending on the package. This is optional though.

EDIT: TV Tropes ot the rescue! [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheBBC]

Lol, I don't have a TV, and no you don't have to go through a lot of hoops (don't watch any live TV, so as a bonus, yes I'm being legal lol). In fact, not even seen one of their spurious, empty 'detector' vans either.

Don't have much opinion on TV any more, seeing as I don't watch it any more, lol.
