So I've been in this samey mystery after mystery after mystery rut for a while now, All I've read in the past 6 months or so is Dean Koontz. He's an amazing writer and if you've never looked into him you should check him out. But I'm really looking for something a little darker. This might sound a little dumb but I want something dark and possibly depressing, that's what I'm requesting but this is a general book thread, talk about your favorite books.

Jurassic Park by the late Michael Crichton. Favourite book by my favourite author. His Prey and Stephen King's novella The Mist are second and third, respectively. Mogworld by Yahtzee is in the top 10.

I have only read one of his novels, Watchers, but I thought it was amazing. I really ought to read more of his stuff.

Areas of my expertise and more information than you require are so flipping funny. John Hodgman, check them out. The audiobooks are better.

Hard to say really, many good titles out there I could choose from.

I will say that the best book I have read was definitely NOT an Ayn Rand piece...

Fiction: "Average American Male" by Chad Kultgen.

Non-fiction: "Playing with Fire" by Theo Fleury (honorable mention to "The Game" by Ken Dreyden). Yes, I'm obsessed with hockey.

Illuminatus Trilogy, if you want a mind fuck read that shit, because it makes no sense and all the sense at the same time. Eventually after reading that book you become completely obsessed with the number 23, and it leads to your whole world being blown open...

A Storm of Swords by George RR Martin, is the best book I've read. The only book to ever make me cry.

My vote though goes to The Forever War, a story which takes a lot of its universe from Starship Troopers but follows the life of a space marine dealing with the effects relativity has on his life. Each time he returns to Earth it's changed radically from what he once knew, each time he returns to the military; as it has the only people he knows.
War. War never changes.

Sorry, it felt appropriate.

Agreed. You could say the same thing about V for Vendetta as well.

Past Mortem by I [edit] Ben Elton.
God-damn, that was an amazing book.
Have you read Dead Famous? It's by the same guy.
Thirdeded'. Also This Other Eden and The First Casualty. He's an amazing author.

The best book I've ever read would have to be, clichéd as it is, 1984. However, despite its brilliance, my favourite book is Watership Down. Read it as a child, and it holds high sentimental value for me (so much so that I'm on my fourth copy, I've read it so often I've managed to destroy the book itself three times).

I read an extortionate amount (so many missed bus and train stops...), but not found a novel to top those two as yet.

Misery by stephen king,

first king I ever read and ive re-read it like 5 times, Its gotta be a special book to be able to do that

its just so creepy, theres no supernatural horror, its all the horror of a twisted mind its brilliant!

while I like king the only other one that comes close for me is needful things

As an (aspiring) English teacher, I read a lot, so I like this thread.

My favorite book of all time is Chuck Palahniuk's "Choke". I know it isn't the greatest book ever written, but I don't think I've ever been so enthralled in a story.

I'm a big fan of every one of Chuck Palahniuk's books (Rant is a close second behind Choke). I was slightly disappointed when the latest Extra Credit's video, which dealt with "In medias res", didn't mention Palahnuik, because a good deal of his works deal with that technique. He does it better than anyone I've ever read.
