To start off, I'm just about to finish Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, and I have to say it's in my top 5 favorite books. It presented a very new view on consciousness & language that really got me thinking. Since this is the Escapist, I bet a few of you have read it before, but other than my SUPA English teacher, nobody else I've talked to has even heard of the author, let alone this particular book.

So, Escapists, what great books have you read that nobody else has?

Edit: Thought of some more.

Ray Bradbury's and Richard Matheson's short stories. Yes, you've probably read A Sound of Thunder, or I Am Legend, but I doubt many people are familiar with The Fog Horn or Witch War. If you are, all the better.

In my time on the escapist I've only come across one person who knows what the Black Company series is, by Glen Cook, so I think I can count that as 'books no one knows'. It's a terrific 10-book series about a group of mercenaries. It's got war and magic/fantasy. It's a lovely series.

Nights Dawn Trilogy.

The Strain

Day By Day Armageddon.

And the two books of the "Morning Star Strain" series.

Would you say it's similar to the Shane Schofield series (if you've heard of it) by Matt Reilly, except for the fantasy aspect?

Joseph Heller's God Knows. He's quite well known for Catch-22, which is certainly the better novel and one of my favorites of all time, but his other books don't seem to get much recognition.

Well of Darkness.

Despite its very crappy name, its very good! Trust me people, it has nothing to do with wells.

Afraid I've not heard of that series. I need to reread the Black Company series anyway since they've finally released the final 4 books again and I have the ability to finish the series; I gotta refresh my memory and all. I do remember that there were terrific details on the battles that got me into simply loving war and tactics.

Hmm I'd have to say the Night Angel series. Even if the third one was a bit weak.

Also it is getting increasingly more difficult to find someone who has read both horror originals - Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster.

Nobody's read Snow Crash, American Gods, The Forever War, or I Am Legend? What's you're idea of nobody? Hell, I read three of those four for a college class. *shakes head*

Personally, I'm a fan of this obscure author Chris A. Jackson, particularly his book Weapon of Flesh. You won't find it in bookstores, but you can get it online. Great read from a truly unknown author.

Snow Crash was the only relatively unknown one. The rest were just the other contenders in my top 5 favorite books.

Edit: Though I do realize that my wording could be misconstrued.

Well, add one more, because I love that series.

I'd have said the Name of the Wind had Maxthereaper not reviewed it.

Have enough people heard of the The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix for it to belong elsewhere?

I've heard of it, but only because I just got back from working at a bookstore.

That does sound good. Gotta get to that at some point.

OT: My vote goes to the "Forgotten Realms" series by R.A. Salvatore or maybe the "Redwall" series by Brian Jacques. To my knowledge, not many people know of em, but I could be wrong.

Got it. Though I still think Snow Crash is fairly well known. Neil Stephenson is now a best-selling author because of Anathem, and quite a few people are discovering his back-catalog.

I have yet to meet other fine people that know of his greatness. Living in a small rural town is exactly how one would picture it >_<

Was it me? Because I remember making a thread about books that needed to be made into movies awhile back, and that's what I put in the OP.

Yeah, so the Chronicles of the Black Company for me.

I love Redwall! It was my favorite book series as a kid, and I've read every one except the newest. Great series, but it's far from being obscure. They made a TV show about it ten years ago, I think.

No, I guess it's up to 3 people now. I'm thinking I'll be getting back into it once I finish reading through The Necronomicon, host of most all of H.P. Lovecraft's major works.

Wait a second, that's what I'm reading right now, too.

I'm in the middle of a story called "Dreams in the Witch House, or something to that effect.
