I'd like to take time and challenge my mind with a great mystery game. Anyone knows one of those? Be sure to keep me interested throughout the whole game.

The Blackwell series is pretty damn good: http://www.gog.com/game/blackwell_bundle

I also second Myst, Gabriel Knight, and Tex Murphy, they're excellent games. I've heard good things about The Wolf Among Us, but haven't played it, so I can't comment.

I'll back The Wolf Among Us. It's Telltale though, so it's less game and more interactive novel.

5 Days A Stranger

It's free, it's awesome, it's compelling, it has horror and mystery elements.

It's done in the same style as Day Of The Tentacle, Sam And Max, and Monkey Island.

I second this! FREE! I would also say to look into The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. The Escapist just reviewed it, but it includes mild to massive spoilers so I'm hesitant to suggest you read it.

Second The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, "playing" it now, and it is very good, beautiful as well. Noir Syndrome is a pixel art, procedurally generated murder mystery, I quite enjoy it. L.A. Noir, but it is not that good. Upcoming Kona and Firewatch I guess could be as well. Maybe any of the old Sierra games could be, I am sure they had a mystery one. There really should be more games in this genre.

It's okay. It also feels kind of bland.

7 days a skeptic, OTOH, went in the other direction and had idiot balls galore and crappy instant death traps.

OTOH, I loved Tribley's Notes and 6 days a sacrifice.

If you don't mind old fashioned point & click adventure games then you've got tons of options. Gabriel Knight, Myst, and Tex Murphy are the classics of the genre while most recently Wolf Among Us is a more recent game in a similar style, but those have all already been mention so for my own part I'll point out Syberia.

It's a neat puzzle adventure game set in this imaginative steampunk/clockwork style setting. Is there a word for that? Clockpunk? Anyway it's also got some really well designed puzzles and a fun story. Totally worth looking into.

To further the OP's question a bit. What mystery games have the best mystery and/or puzzles? I love quite a few mystery games, but not many do both amazingly well. Though some have no intention of actually doing puzzles at all.

I've said before, no, i won't play any pixelated game from the 90s, because i can do the same thing on my phone. Instead, i want something atleast watchable on the PC. Syberia might be that game, but its not mystery. Its adventure puzzle game. In my vision, a mystery game is something like Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, still life etc.

I enjoyed Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper & Sherlock Holmes:The Awakened.

Nemesis was just OK.

Your loss, you're missing a lot of fantastic games that way.

I'd also consider Syberia a better mystery game than Indigo Prophecy, since at least its story doesn't descend into utter nonsense 2/3 of the way through. Still if you want more modern games I haven't played them but I've heard decent things about those newer Sherlock Holmes games, and if you don't mind a splash of horror there was a neat point & click named Scratches from a few years ago I quite enjoyed that had a good horror/mystery vibe going for it.
