This seems to be a reasonably sane place to discuss videogames so ill give it a try. Hi.

I just played through turok on the 360 and found its turrets somewhat lacking. Got me thinking on what games had given me the best turret experiences. Call of duty 2 had some segments where you mounted a 88 canonm some british mission defending a bridge. Then ther was that desert mission where you used both a fixed machinegun and called in artillery. That was pretty intense. In some games, getting to that turret can be such a relief, Id say Gears of war is a good example. On the hardest setting you constantly run from cover to cover, blindfiring scary bastards, and then you are given the opportunity to mow them down in drows with unlimited ammo. Aaah

Portal. But not quite for the reason you had in mind...

The Halo series turrets are fun to use, too, especially with the third's option to dismount it and "Jesse Ventura" it around. That can be very satisfying in single player and multiplayer. The Gears "Troika" bits are fun too, as are the turret sequences in Armed and Dangerous.

actually i hardly touched the turrets in gears of war except in the early city stage. but lets see here, when it comes to turrets i can't think of too many games where i used them whenever they were available except maybe in the outfit where you could airdrop turrrets in whenever you wanted.

thats probably my biggest issue with turrets they tend to place them where they are usually the least helpful, i can think of a few games where turrets where a holy grail to your cause but honestly i can't think of the name of those games. it's been a while

ok i forgot about the halo turrets those were useful

I have to agree and say the troikas are the best. Just watching bits of locust explode in glorious low poly chunks is almost as much fun as sawing them in half with a chainsaw or stamping on their head.

You get some interesting stuff as far as turrets go in RTS base defenses, particularly with the Command and conquer games. Tesla Coils and Prism Towers in RA2 and Obelisks and Buzzer Hives in C&C3 are favourites of mine.

I'm also quite fond of the sentries in TF2, sappable though they may be.

Definitely one of the best turret experiences, and the fact that you can upgrade them to use rockets just makes them all the more sweeter. Besides, using the Demoman's indirect line-of-fire weaponry has always been my favorite for taking out turrets in TF2.

Even though you get to use it only about three times, the mini-gun in GRAW 1 and 2. I don't know whether if I actually like the turret or if its

just fun to play that section, but I love it.

And ThorneofBlackness, TF2 is Team Fortress 2

Love your Jesse reference. Such a good film and a good point about the Halo turrets.
I liked the minigun in COD4 (again, it's a minigun, what's not to like?). Timesplitters Future Perfect might have had some good ones... my memory is sucky of late.

I love detaching the Halo 3 turrets. The flamethrower and missile pod (can they be counted as turrets though? I know the missile pod is sometimes attached to things in campaign) are my absolute favourites. Fire and forget with the missile pod, but with the flamethrower it's just...uhhh...fire.

The turrets on CoD4 are brilliant too. Especially the one in Backlot.

What the hell is TF2??

Everyone goes on about it, but I got no idea if I've played it or not!
Team Fortress 2. It came in the Orange Box

Did you know that if you keep those Turrets with you in chapter 'Entaglement' in Half-Life 2, you can kill Mossman and defend that room with 8 instead of 3.

For Rts games there are alot, i remember thinking the obelix of nod from the original c&c game being really cool (and about the only thing that could hurt my friends mammothtanks). But for pure effectiveness id pick the protoss turret from starcraft. It was really versatile, in the sp campaign it made all the protoss missions kind of easy. Besides that i think the rts game with the best turrets/fixed emplacements is company of heroes.

Not that it was a great game, but Deus Ex 2 had some really nice instances where you could hack turrets and turn them against their masters.

Portal turrets are the best. They sound so scared and on edge. "Hello?" "Are you still there?"

And I love it when you knock them over. "Wahaghaharg!" Good times.

Sod the minigun, I prefer the bloody great gunship cannon!
