Various groups have gotten their hands on a demo and the somewhat positive buzz surprised me.

This is good news, I've been getting Lolipop Chainsaw vibes from it to be honest. I hope I'm wrong!

"It?s a frantic, fast-paced third-person action game, where players chain melee and gun-based offense together to slaughter (with plenty of blood) waves upon waves of soldiers"

"The only significant hindrance during combat was the game?s camera(...)"

Are we sure this is "positive buzz"? The writer just panned EVERYTHING about the game - gameplay, controls, camera - except for the humor, which as much as he liked it, recognizes that "(...)is extremely juvenile, low-brow and often idiotic(...)". Even if we decided juvenile, low-brow and idiotic humor is a strong selling point, what about everything else?

You consider mechanics being called "standard and expected" to be "panned"? It's not exactly as though there's all that much innovation on the formula those third-person sword&gun action games can do compared to Devil May Cry, you know. At least not and still be fun. "Panning" would be if they said the controls flat-out didn't work, or that it was boring to roll Deadpool through hordes of nameless enemies; not that the controls will be rather familiar to you if you've played any other hack&slash game in your entire lifetime.

I hope it's good, but I honestly don't expect it to be. The fact that the trailers thus far have gone out of their way to only show brief parts of real time gameplay isn't a good sign.

Panning may not be the right word for it but when you describe gameplay in a single, bored sentence and never refer to it ever again in your review it tells me that it's not the strongest aspect of the game.

If anything, then juvenile humour is meant to be reassuring, that we are indeed getting the authentic Deadpool experience. As for the combat, he liked it, didn't he? The camera was supposedly the only major annoyance, but we'll see how it looks in gameplay videos.

There are plenty of good hack-and-slash games, but Deadpools main selling point is his reputation and popularity. There are no Deadpool movies, no Deadpool merchandise and only so many Deadpool comics. People want more and they will buy this game to see their favourite psycho in action.

I'm opimistically cautious and hoping that they won't mess it up.

It was a relatively short hands-on after all, I don't think they had the time to get familiar with the mechanics. Some flaws are only revealed after hours of gameplay and enemy variety is easy to underestimate in minutes of playing.

"Might not suck"?

I think it looks pretty damn good! And I have faith in the studio. It's not easy to make good Transformers games, but High Moon did it... twice!

Color me cautiously optimistic, as with any licensed product. It's too easy to mess up stuff based on a comic/movie etc.

I'm looking forward to Deadpool saying the same lines over and over again as these games are wont to do.

I'm inclined to be cautiously optimistic. I love Deadpool as a character, he is one of my favourite Marvel characters. A wise-cracking badass with none of the angst, self-pity and drama that sours so many otherwise interesting characters. If they make the game like Devil May Cry 4, with large environments, interesting characters, plenty of killable enemies and LOTS off hack'n'slash, then it should be at least worth playing.

The only reason people think it'll be good is because of the hype surrounding the character. If you made the main character Max Chesthair, nobody would want it. And I will certainly not even touch it unless it receives a glowing review from someone with a critical eye for these things.
Yup, that's totally the only reason. It's not like High Moon Studios have released two pretty darn excellent licensed games before or anything like that.

OT: I'm excited for it. After War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron, I have a pretty decent amount of faith in HMS to deliver an experience with solid gameplay and writing that is respectful and appropriate to it's source material. Probably won't buy on release, but that is mainly down to me being a bit strapped for cash this summer season.
