Can anyone tell me why every generation feels that they are the last generation to live? Really? And it is not a paranoia thing. Why is it that there is a feeling not a knowing of a doomed apocalypse that never happens?
Just asking.

People are naturally arrogant creatures who believe that life begins and ends with theirs. After all, when they die, what will they know of life?

This is my answer, feel free to denounce it as you see fit.

It's probably because we always think we're too awesome or too dumb to let anything else come after us.

I really doubt a few million people who want to go out in a bang are considered a representation of their generation, when there are about 6-7 billion other people who don't know or give a darn about it.

Now food crisis in the future...that is a more coherent thread to talk about *wink wink*

People like to feel special I guess, that's the exact reason why I know that the world won't end at least in this century.

Well, I think Radoh got a good point, people also are so centred around themselfes that they want to be the last, the most important generation before the world ends or something like this. Also I would say: Angst, thats all what drives people to act ridicilously stupid.

Like everyone else stated, we think we're special. We humans in a way put ourselves as the main characters of life. We don't look at the things going on around us, hell most people don't even take the time to think about their fellow individuals

It's probably because we realize that if we really are the last humans on Earth, we need to make a much better impression on those who find us after we're gone.

I pretty much agree with this, One of the things I've come to realise is that every generation believes themselves to be the last, look at the amount of people that have been called the antichrist; the one who is mentioned in Revelation as bringing on the apocalypse. There were books written about Napoleon being the antichrist. every US president in the history of ever has been called it, and not just in passing, but by people who study the passages of the bible, and work out the abstract bits and dates to suit their accusation.

It is a mixture of a fear of uncertainty for the future (The earth must end some time, that time could be now!) and arrogance that the universe began with our birth, and ends with our death, and we are the most important generation.

Um....Does every generation think it's going to be the last. I have never heard anyone say that.

What I'm saying is that your premise is extremely debatable.

Well...you can kind of understand during World War 2 how The Holocost coupled with Nuclear Weapons Tests could have be the stuff of pants-pooping fears.

Speaking of Nuclear Weapons, there was also the arms race during the cold war. Americans and Russians knew that one side or the other could push a button which would lead to other buttons being pressed which would end with hundreds of nuclear weapons being launched world wide in a sort of, 'if I can't play on the Earth my way, than neither can you' before setting the whole thing ablaze.

Most other doomsday scenarios I'm aware of require some sort of religious belief attached (unless you read cracked.com articles). Screw those.
