I can understand why. It just upsets me to see such a good show taken down, and be unable to access the older episodes. Who's episodes are they anyway?

There are new Extra Credits videos up on Youtube now. I'm not sure about the older ones though.

EDIT: Also, welcome to the Escapist! And congrats on your first post!

As of right now, there is no legal way to view those episodes.
Suddenly, their Piracy episode has taken on a whole new irony.

The link to their Youtube channel is here [http://www.youtube.com/user/ExtraCreditz]. So far, they've only got 4 videos up yet.

Welcome to the Escapist, we will provide you with fun and engaging contributors then fail to pay them in order to make them quit. This will sadden and anger you. Please join our publishers club.

Does anyone have more details on why they left? Or were they asked to leave by The Escapist?
It was apparently due to the Rockethub thing. The EC team claims that the Escapist demanded most of the donations, and they quit due to this being a dick move.
I'm not here to pass judgment on either side (I still love the Escapist, after all), but removing the videos is going a bit too far. They need to be preserved, because they need to be seen.

Seeing how Extra Credits owns their own show, they have the rights to re-publish/de-distribute their episodes.
It's ultimately up to them whether or not they want their message to be heard or not; not The Escapist.

They own the show, yes. But it's up in the air whether or not they own the particular episodes made for the Escapist. We don't know what their contract said.

The Escapist has no money (apparently) so they could not pay them (the Extra Creditz crew) and when they (the Extra Creditz crew) solicited funds for one of the artist's needed surgery they (the Escapist) said that nearly all the money raised belonged to them because they (the Escapist) suggested that they (the Extra Creditz crew) solicit for the funds online.

It would be most unfortunate if the contract wasn't limited strictly to licensing the episodes. Stupid, even.
Too many real-life performers and even game developers have had the rug swept out from under them due to contractual "ownership". Given the nature of their show and the subject matter, I would hope Extra Credits wouldn't have been so stupid as to hand over actual ownership of those episodes.

Still, what you say is true. We don't know what their contract said for sure.

It would also be stupid for the people funding said episodes (Escapist) to fund a show that they would lose all right to replay because the artist decided to pull out.

Based on what's happening, it looks like both sides got the best deal possible. The escapist keeps the episodes they were bankrolling, and the EC crew gets to continue the show after the original contract fell through.

And yes, I'm fully aware that the Escapist was late on it's payments, but we really don't know if there was a contractual breach because of it.

It would, but Licensing contracts allow for expiration dates. This prevents the publisher from essentially "enslaving" the performer/producer while protecting the publisher from getting stiffed by the performer/producer.

Such dates are important when the nature of the product is intangible (movies, games, data etc).

The term "Late" implies that there was a time table agreed upon at some point for payment. Legally speaking, one cannot be "late" for an "indefinite" period of time.
I would hope at least *that* was in the contract.

Sorry about the ninja edit on my post. I deleted the second sentence shortly after because I found a ton of stuff about what happened online (particularly through this guy [http://www.examiner.com/video-game-culture-in-new-york/extra-credits-leaves-escapist]).

That's the Extra Credits side. The Escapist CEO was saying that the Extra Credits people deceived them about contributing some amount of overflow money towards keeping Extra Credits afloat, when they were actually planning to use their back-pay and the overflow money to start their own publishing company.

Either way, it comes back to money troubles at The Escapist, which isn't shocking. Most sites don't make much profit (when they break even at all), and it's largely the giants (Facebook, Google, etc), the giant aggregation sites like HuffPost, and the gossip/celebrity/scandal sites that actually make significant profit off of online ads.

Oh come on. Do some research: EC said this week they got all their old episodes up and they will be uploaded either to PATV or to their Youtube. The Escapist has no right to them so they CAN'T have them up without permission.

The EC team announced today in their episode on YouTube that they are moving to Penny Arcade TV and taking all of their old episodes with them. I imagine that means that you will be able to access past episodes there once they make their first appearance next Thursday.

If I had to guess, then EC got their IP back from Escapist and asked them to remove the videos so that PATV (their soon to be new home) will have them.

and somehow I missed this post

so. yeah. Not a dick move by Escapist, but most probably one of those legal things that had to happen for both parties to move on.

That is the link to today's episode. At the end, they say that they are moving to Penny Arcade TV, and are bringing all the old episodes with them.

Oh God, the Extra Credits episodes were the entire reason I came to this site. And I signed up just to lament this happening.

Their intellectual discussions on video games were top notch material. I sure hope to see them around somewhere, and Escapist, you just lost your best material.
