I'm curious as to what everyone thinks will happen in the future of Canadian politics, the Green party in particular. With the future hot topic the environment does anyone think that they will win an election someday or will they forever sit in the shadows with there opinion barely voiced?

there is no future for the green party. If I remember correctly, they didn't get a seat in the election.

EDIT: They will forever remain a 'I don't really know who I should vote for, so I just put in Green party as undecided' to MOST people.

Look at it this way. If this global warming shit turns out not to be a hoax then the green party are definately going to get in eventually.

They should try the route of anti-war/environment/pro-legalizing cannabis direction.

That would probably work, considering all the baby boomers, and how all their kids are around enlistment age...

I think the marijuana party has been trying that...

I think when this generation of kids grows up into adults the green party will win since a lot of todays kids are very intersted in the enviroment

The Green party down here in Australia have turned into a viable political force. They've picked up several seats in our Senate, giving them the balance of power. All through the power of, "Everyone else sucks, I'll vote Green".

Once upon a time, we had a wonderful little party known as the Democrats. Campaigning on the platform of "We'll keep the bastards honest", they were able to retain the balance of power and prevent the extremes of Government from pushing through retarded legislation. Then the leader sold out on a big issue at the time, the introduction of the GST. Last year, the Democrats announced that they were disbanding permanently, after failing at every subsequent election.

The moral of this story is, if you're going to be a third party, be a third party. Tread that fine line with care, because either side of you is a fifty mile drop into a pit of acidic spikes and flaming, explosive piranhas.

Ya, but they're shmucks. We need a multi-platform party, not just a bunch of lazy stoners.

I completely agree with you and it really pisses me off that a lot of voters, vote for the party they do because their parents do. Open your minds people!

I think this past election was the Green party's big chance, and they lost it. They had a seat in Parliament, and their leader was polling well, but they still didn't make it. They are, I expect, doomed to to the margins for the rest of their existence.

Which is just fine with me because we don't need another party splitting the Left. Additionally, I'm not convinced that they're not just a right-leaning party in a green outfit.

I'm really hoping for a surge in NDP support. They take all of the best qualities of the Greens and the Liberals, and there's not too much in their platform that I'm not down for.

I think that the green party might eventually get a few seats, like the NDP.

But the Conservatives and Liberals will always have the real power.
Also, while we're on the topic, I want the Bloc Quebecois to die and burn in hell...

Also I like the Tories. They promised to cut the GST ....

AND THEY DID! Of course, that was before the economic crisis.

The benefit of smaller, issue specific parties is the way they can influence other parties. In Europe as the Green parties started taking votes from the mainstream parties the major parties began adopting environmental policies to win back voters. Even if the Canadian Green party do not get elected to power the more votes they take from the dominant parties the more chance they have of having their policies put into practice

best quality you mean by tanking the economy? look at the ndp's past track record when it's been in power

as for the green party, they are the party you vote for when you want to throw away your vote. they have no platform besides "environmental reform" unless they smarten up and develop and actual platform they won't ever get into power

Of course then their are evil parties like the Bloc Quebecois. They want to have Quebec become it's own country. Of course they could not POSSIBLY win the election since they don't have MP's outside of Quebec(as far as I know) So all they do is stop all the other parties from gaining seats (since they pretty much own Quebec). This of course doesn't help French-Canadians in the least.Imagine how much much easier it would be for smaller parties and the big ones to gain seats if the Bloc didn't exist.
