Now the title may seem as if I'm purposefully trying to start a flame war between WoW fans and the fans of the newly released, Star Wars: The Old Republic. That's not the case; what I would like to know is your opinions about the trolls who are purposefully giving this game harsh reviews because of their fixation with WoW. I played WoW, I enjoyed it but I didn't play it religiously; however SWTOR has got me hooked and the answer is simply this.
I feel a sense of purpose in SWTOR; in WoW, was there really a story outside of the books/cinematics? Not that I saw; there was no reason to keep going and leveling up because I wasn't striving towards anything. It was simply a large world to do random quests in and while that may be nice for a while, eventually I got bored because I felt nothing keeping me there. SWTOR, as many know, has different stories, each being completely different due to your classes. You may be on the same world but you'll get different companions as a Trooper than say a Smuggler. The stories for each are well written and obviously fully voiced, which adds a much less tiring experience than say reading lines of text. (Something the Legend of Zelda series has been annoying me with for some time now but that's a different story)
The gameplay is pretty much exactly like WoW, there's no hiding that fact but with everything else setting it apart from the game, it doesn't come off as a complete WoW clone. I'm not trying to say that SWTOR should beat WoW but just that I enjoy playing it a lot more due to the story lines that keep me interested from start to finish.
Now my questions for you guys are: What do you think of SWTOR? Do you enjoy it? For those who have played WoW, do you think it is a knock-off or is its own game? Finally, do you think this "war" against the two is simply nonsense?
