After spending the last few months struggling to get my dry and bland looking hair to look good, I thought I would ask my stylish Escapists for their advice and comments.

To some people, how their hair looks is the last thing on their minds. To others, it can be one of the most easily available ways of expressing your personality. Either way, no one can deny that your hair plays a major role in how you are perceived by those around you.

So my questions are:
-What is your favorite hairstyle and why (pics encouraged)?
-Your least favorite hairstyle and why (pics encouraged)?
-What hairstyle do you currently have (pics encouraged, they can be googled or you can upload an image of your hair)?
-What do you do (if anything) to keep the hairstyle you have? This isn't just about gels used to keep its shape, but also what you do/use to keep your hair's texture and level of moisture.
-How long do you spend setting your hair up (styling it, if you do)?
-How important is your hair on a scale of 0 to 10 (zero being "I don't give a damn how my hair looks" and 10 being "My world falls apart if it isn't exactly the way I want it")?

This thread is about both men and women, and while I know the escapist is frequented by people who generally don't fret too much about their looks, I hope that this thread will hold some helpful and humorous discussions!

P.S. I am an 18 year old male with dirty blonde hair, short on the sides and a little longer on the top (I generally let it grew out over a month or two before I finally get off my butt and cut it). I usually just use mousse or axe hair gel to spike it up and back. My hair is pretty dry no matter what I do, and it lays straight and frizzles unless I use copious amounts of styling gel.

I've given serious consideration to dying it dark brown or black, as I have always wanted darker hair because I feel it is more mature looking and distinguished, lol.

So my fellow Escapists, style away!

I have very thick and fairly curly hair. Because of this there's really only two hair styles available to me, "short" and "jew-'fro." So yeah, not a lot interesting variety for me. I mean, I guess I could always straighten my hair or something, but there's no way in hell I would put time and effort into that.

So I basically just keep my hair short, and then do absolutely nothing with it except showering on a regular basis.

My haircuts are basically the easiest things ever. The barber just runs a trimmer through my hair for 5 minutes, evens everything out, and then I'm done.

Military medium regulation.

Medium regulation.

When I was in, I it tightened up once a week. Now that I'm out (and currently unemployed) and given the fact that barbers generally charge ~$15 for a haircut (rather than the $5 I was used to), I only get it cut for special occasions and self buzz normally.

Other than that, nothing.
-How long do you spend setting your hair up (styling it, if you do)?
None.

3. Impossible to have a "bad hair day" with short hair. And, if I did, I wouldn't give a shit.

I have sort-of-but-not-very curly brown hair that goes into a bit of a mop if I grow it very long. I tend to keep it longer than most people, I guess if I straightened it (I rarely do, I was given some straighteners once) it would end up being a bit of a Bieber-cut. I don't really do much to my hair, I've got this dry-look paste stuff which I stick my fringe up with, otherwise it looks awful (and can move about and reveal my slightly receding hairline. Not good at 19), but I don't spend very long doing it, just stick it in and ruffle it about a lot. Basically, my hair looks like a haystack, and if I did nothing it would look like a mop. I care a bit, but not enough to put any massive effort in. I've thought about dying it, but I'm not sure I could pull it off.

As for favourites and least favourites, well, I like people who do different things with their hair, dye it, spike it weirdly, get dreadlocks, whatever. On of my friends has rainbow dreadlocks and they're pretty fantastic. Other than that, messy hair. I guess I like hairstyles where people are either being individual or just don't really care, I hate hairstyles where people are trying to be flashy but aren't being interesting about it. Stuff like that stupid extra-short back and sides that douchebags get these days is terrible (although I did see someone with that, dyed turquoise, I liked that, nicely subverting the douchebagness). If you're going to put a lot of effort into it, why do you want to look like everyone else?

Favorite: Approximately shoulder length hair that can be pulled back into a pony tail. I feel despite being a guy and it being frowned upon and unprofessional to have that long of hair, if you take care of it and its clean and well maintained it shouldn't be an issue

Least favorite: um... the mullet I guess?

Current: Think of Loyd from Dumb and Dumber (gap in teeth and all). Oh and I have shitty thing that makes it so a section of the back of my head is a porcupines ass when cut to short... like currently.

Upkeep: None... fuck this hair cut. I was in a job search and had to look "professional". Now that I've been hired I can let it grow out some, not to desired length but at least some. I do wash and condition everyday for ultra sexy smooth and softness (seriously chicks dig my hair, most are jealous). As for brand of shampoo/conditioner... um... I guess it is currently Fructis because that is what I happened to get this time.

Morning styling: 6 seconds of combing?

Hair rating: 4 and 9.5. The 4 because I think it blows goats that I have to keep my hair short especially w/ the porcupine ass effect, but I've come to accept that my hair is going to look funny unless I use gel and damn that noise. The 9.5 because my hair is fuck awesome and if I lose it I will be... think of the saddest panda, and then imagine it getting hit by a buss... that sad.

PS. I have near black hair, very thick and full, and male if you didn't catch that.

My hair is like David Tennant's. It's darkish brown and naturally lies down flat, but I usually "style" it (ie: run some gel through it and let the front stick up a bit in a messy way). I don't purposefully try for any certain hairstyle, and I'm not too picky, but it more often than not resembles Tennant's hair without much work.

I used to just leave it and not bother, but my bangs hanging on my forehead starting bugging me. My current hairstyle suits me, my bangs don't bug me, and people are constantly commenting on it, so win-win, I guess.

Edit: I guess I should post a picture. I'm a 20 year old male, BTW

Five words, I don't give a shit(look at me I'm so cool)

I've got a brown mop that I don't do anything with just how it is when I've got out of the shower, so one day it looks very Jim Morrison-esque then another Ian Brown-esque. The wind blows it about the place so I don't bother styling it, on ocassion the wind actually makes it look clue but most of the time it looks shit. Another thing is I hate getting my haircut, I like to leave it as long as possible before I get it chopped.

I'm an 18 year old male, as well.
I sport long hair at all times, which I either leave long

or tie up

Hey, I never said I looked good.
Anyway, on to the questions.

-What is your favourite hairstyle and why (pics encouraged)?
Pick one of the above.
-Your least favourite hairstyle and why (pics encouraged)?
The one where you take one side of your hair and apply a metric ton of gel so it sticks to the side of your face.
Or the one where you shave/cut really short the hair on the sides of your head while leaving the rest on the top long and gelled.
Side note - if anyone has these hairstyles I hope I didn't offend y'all.
-What do you do (if anything) to keep the hairstyle you have? This isn't just about gels used to keep its shape, but also what you do/use to keep your hair's texture and level of moisture.
I wash it a lot; twice daily, sometimes thrice. Little else really, besides the soap used, which must have some kind of conditioner in it.
-How long do you spend setting your hair up (styling it, if you do)?
About 5-10 minutes, depending on how much bed-head I wake up with, though all I do is brush it then tie it up.
-How important is your hair on a scale of 0 to 10 (zero being "I don't give a damn how my hair looks" and 10 being "My world falls apart if it isn't exactly the way I want it")?
I'd say about a 5, because while I won't leave the house looking like Bob Marley, I don't really care if it's not amazing looking. It's comfortable for me, and I like the look of it, and that's all I care about.
I've given serious consideration to dying it dark brown or black, as I have always wanted darker hair because I feel it is more mature looking and distinguished, lol.
Barney Stinson begs to differ.

I am going bald, so I have the only hairstyle acceptable to me, the shaved head look. It takes absolutely no styling and always looks cool.

Another 18 year old male here, boy we're not a minority.

I spend almost no time on my hair, I don't particularly care about it other than not being gross, haven't had it cut or trimmed in over two years, all I do is wash it once a day and the only way to describe it is fabulous silky brown smoke. While I do use special shampoo the stop my massive amouts of dandruff and oil my hair is pretty much zero maintenance. I can't really find any picture similar to it because it's kind of unique, think long hair down my back about 2-3 feet long with it all coming together tied up with a elastic band at the last 3 inches.
It's quite funny when people often ask me where I get it styled.

The best & worst style for males & females time!

Best male, I don't know.... Mine?
Best female, the sidetail, elegant, stunning and in most cases cute.
Worst male, the aussie mullet.
Worst female, I once saw a woman in a bowl cut, never again.

Surprisingly I don't mind shaved for ether gender, once fell for a shaved head girl.

I have a mohican, not a small blended mohawk, a full blown punk mohican, also my favourite hairstyle of course. It usually takes me about 20 minutes and shit load of hairspray but I can leave it for several days ;) It's very important to me because it's wearing my heart on my sleeve though it does get very annoying having all the idiots asking me about it who just aren't used to seeing it anymore.

I really hate the current popular douchebag hairsyle, slightly shorter (almost shaved on the sides) I really can't describe it well, but look at the guys on shows like Jersey Shore and The Only Way Is Essex.

I'm a 27 year old woman, and my hair is very important to me. It never used to be, I'd go out with it sticking up and out in every direction, but a couple of years ago I had a sort of divine moment where I realised I actually care a bunch about fashion and appearance. These days I own a bunch of hair care products (also cosmetics and so many skin products) and will spend more than five minutes on my hair. I want to make this clear though: This is all for me. I don't do any of this for the pleasure of anyone but myself. I'm also the type of woman to go kayaking or throw myself at a muddy obstacle course and not give a damn what I look like, in short, no judging a book by its cover!

I don't have a favourite hairstyle, I like to experiment. My hair is very thick and wavy, so there's a lot I can do with it. Although, as I said on the short hairstyles on women thread, there's not much I can do that will flatter my face shape which is a bummer. My least favourite style would be any style that is half-assed, or unflattering on its owner.

At the moment I have collarbone-length hair with a thick fringe. I need a fringe to hide my GIGANTIC forehead, the length is for ease of styling. I didn't get layers this time because I wanted to try something new. For the first time in YEARS my hair is its natural colour. I have absolutely no idea what this colour is called. In the sun it looks gold, out of the sun it looks brown. I will almost certainly be colouring it again soon. I'm thinking ash-blonde, but I know I'll change my mind a few hundred times before I go through with it.

In short, I love my hair. I never used to, but I've embraced it. Plus, these days there are so many products and so much styling equipment that I can actually tame it into something attractive, not the rat's nest I used to sport back in school.

Can't say I have a favorite hairstyle. All that matters to me is that the hair is long. Least favorite would be girls having shorter than shoulder length hair, due to my love for long hair.
Currently have hair down to my waist if pulled straight. It's wavey and curly here and there. Had the same hairstyle for the past eight years or so, which is the regular metalhead style of just letting it lie evenly on both sides.
To get it as I want it I only comb it twice; before showering and after, then I use a hair dryer(if I let it dry by itself it gets really fucking curly in the ends). Don't spend any more time fixing it than it takes to dry it.

I'd say my hair is a 10 on the importance scale, without exaggerating too much. It only looks good to me the same day I washed it. The next day I think it looks awful, which sucks since I have to wash it every day if it's a busy week. Will have to solve it by using a pony tail when I've got a job I think, but I don't like how they look on me.
Every time I see a mirror/mirrored surface I have to inspect my hair. People tend to ridicule me for my hair obsession.

Don't have many good pictures of me that show my hair, so this'll have to do. Three years old by now though.

Well, right now my hair is messy as usual, it's naturally flat and bland and I don't have the beauty know-how to make it look better. I have a block fringe going on since I cut it to cosplay Mia Fey for a convention.

I usually wear my hair in a high pony tail for work. Problem for me is I have a very negative image of myself so I think I look horrid no matter what I do with my hair, though I would love for it to look like this;

I'm considering getting it permed to look like that, but I'm worried about ruining my hair like my aunt.

When I get up I just brush my hair and chuck on a hair band. It takes about 5 minutes. I actually view my hair as being really important, I have difficulty recognising people's faces so how people have their hair is kind of like their face to me, and hence I am terrified of bald people or when people shave their heads, it's like they've cut off their face for me o_o

Weirdly, I think I look fantastic in wigs, probably because they give me the length, colour and style I want while also appearing to give my hair more volume due to going on top of my natural hair.

I go over it with an electric razor set to a distance of... um, I think about 1 cm (thats a bit less than half an inch) every once in a while. I prefer to keep it real short because otherwise it feels uncomfortable.
As for what I like to see on other people... I really don't care either way unless they have something truly atrocious, like a mohawk that doesn't fit them (it only works for a few people, or at least that's what I think), or a mullet full stop.

-What is your favorite hairstyle and why (pics encouraged)?
My hair style now.
It is easy to style and matches my height.
Also allows me to wear a wider range of clothes then I did with long hair.

-Your least favorite hairstyle and why (pics encouraged)?

I hate it because it is so generic and boring. too safe. and too boring.

-What hairstyle do you currently have (pics encouraged, they can be googled or you can upload an image of your hair)?
(not me)

-What do you do (if anything) to keep the hairstyle you have? This isn't just about gels used to keep its shape, but also what you do/use to keep your hair's texture and level of moisture.
Hair spray. There is this really cool non sticky hair spray that keeps my hair fluffy but not crispy and can be remolded throughout the day.
Without it I would die.

-How long do you spend setting your hair up (styling it, if you do)?
5 mins. blow dry it, spray it, and make a part.

-How important is your hair on a scale of 0 to 10 (zero being "I don't give a damn how my hair looks" and 10 being "My world falls apart if it isn't exactly the way I want it")?
8. I feel crappy when my hair doesnt fluff up enough,

Don't perm your hair!

The style you want is fairly easy to get you're in luck! You just need a pair of thin straighteners preferably with a rounded edge and some hairspray (or, depending on how thick your hair is, no hairspray). Separate your hair into crown and underneath, then into sections. Take a one-to-two inch thick piece and curl it around the straightening iron, hold it for a few seconds, release and spray with a small amount of hairspray. If your hair's very thick, the hairspray goes on before you curl it. It takes a bit of practice, but guaranteed you'll master it after a few tries. Then all you have to do is wait for your fringe to grow out a bit and sweep it to the side. :)

I have thick, long hair, down to my lower back, nearly touching my butt. I let my best friend cut it recently (she's my hairdresser, how much better can a girl get than a best friend who works at an upscale salon?) and she gave me bangs again, but I don't like the bangs, my face has rounded out and I'm going to grow it out long again.

It's brown and curly, but ever since I hit puberty I've had a stripe of silver hair on the top of my head, mostly on one side just in my bangs. Just a stripe, although I've started to get more silver hairs everywhere else now in the last few years. I used to hate it when I was younger, now I love it. It's really pretty and defining and it gets me a lot of attention.

I usually just blow dry it after a shower, but let it stay wavy. I have the straighten my bangs when they're short; right now I can't even explain the way they're sticking up.

Other than that I usually add a small braid or two in and leave it down, or tie it up in a messy bun. Not the top of the head messy bun, I hate that look. Just at the back of my head. Sometimes I'll use a straightener to do some controlled waves to frame my face, especially when my bangs are long.

A girl who used to work for me would often say I had "Princess Hair". I like that.
