The hardest single player FPS...

...on normal difficulty?

I picked up Crysis during the recent steam sale. I was pleasantly surprised to discover my mid-specs pc can run it on high settings (how technology marches on, eh) and suitably impressed by the visuals. It really is a great looking game.

I've been surprised at how hard it is though. You'd think that a rapidly recharging temp invisibility power would be like god mode, but the NKA are shooting me to bits on a regular basis, and I dread to think of how rough it's going to get when the aliens show up. Don't get me wrong... I quite like the fact that the game will cheerfully throw 10 man patrols at me, but I'm seeing that on-screen message quite often. You know, the one that oh so subtly reminds you that you can lower the difficulty level.

So what's the hardest single player FPS you've played, why was it so hard, and did you enjoy the extra challenge?

Stalker: Shadow Of Chernobyl

Its hard because you have the durability of a sheet of paper, it's hard because ammo is about as easy to find as a plot in pac man and it's hard because radiation fucking everywhere.

But fuck it, I love it.

Aww...On Normal?

This means I can't say World At War.

I'm going with Farcry on 360.

Stealth game where the AI can see you anywhere...Hard as fuck.

I thought Borderlands was pretty tough if you didn't grind to level up or go co-op.

Yep this it. Not to mention, no one is invincible. You can have an experienced, hardened soldier fighting beside you one moment, then next he's dead. Good guns are hard to come by as well. Of course I'm in the begining stages.

I've never found any of the FPS games I've played to be too terribly difficult on normal. Developers seem to tend towards easier on normal difficulties so far as FPS games are concerned.

Without the normal qualification, probably the first CoD. Veteran difficult quickly becomes humourous given that you die in about three shots and the moment a single pixel of your body is exposed, all of the enemy soldiers ignore the entire army fighting alongside you and focus all of their fire on you. It's sort of strange given that there's no in-universe justification for them being after you in particular, unlike in a game like Halo where it would make perfect sense.

I've always found Half-Life 2 quite difficult on normal, not really sure why.

And that kind of annoyed me about Crysis; the KPA soldiers can take far too many bullets.

Killzone 2. It shouldn't take fifteen bullets to drop one guy. And there are dozens of them. And they are all really smart.

Going with this as well.
One of the first quests in the second area, where you're supposed to shoot down six(I think) race cars with guns attached to them, was almost impossible. I died so many times trying to shoot them down.

Can't continue on my second playthrough either. I believe I'm level 45, which is above the mobs where I'm at, but there's so many super monsters that I can't kill!

Probably Shadow of Chernobyl, as others have said. Can't say if it lasts, I never managed to finish it.

On the highest difficulty, probably Serious Sam. Aside from the usual difficulty-raisers, everything is invisible except when attacking you. Even melee enemies. And ones that explode. And bosses.

That's weird. I actually can't play anything less than hard difficulty in HL2 because the game becomes way too easy.

Fortunately, everybody else is also made of paper.

Unfortunately, there are more of them than you.

I've heard that Clear Sky is a lot harder. Haven't gotten around to playing it yet tho, still messing around in SoC. It's awesome!

Killing Floor was pretty tough for me.

And Rainbow Six Vegas 2. You can take maybe 2 bullets, enemies come out of fucking nowhere, and grenades are more frequent than most Call of Duty games.

Don't bother and skip straight to the third game. Clear Sky was a mess.
