Say farewell to those legends we lost in the past ten years. I'll start it out by saying another sad goodbye to Dimebag Darrell and Chuck Schuldiner.

Sure it's glam metal. But it's "Quiet *Fucking* Riot".

RIP Kevin DuBrow.

Chuck Schuldiner.

Vocals / rythm guitar for Death, and a damn fine musician in a genre that can be pretty hit-and-miss.
Not to mention, frontman for Death, who basically created the genre of Death metal. Though I do have to disagree with you on one point, I love almost all Death Metal. Except those bands that just lack the technicality and speed that Death Metal needs. But they're hardly ever heard of.
Also, they aren't dead, and will hopefully pull through, but Zakk Wylde has blood clots on his lungs, and Ronnie James Dio has stomach cancer! :( But in it's early stages. And holy shit, Ronnie's 67!!!

I love death metal when it's done right. There are so-so bands in every category, but I think they're more numerous in death metal because it's accessible and people often think they have to just play fast rather than well. I find myself sorting through a lot of chaff to find the good stuff.

I think Cause of Death is the greatest death metal album of all time, though, so maybe my taste hasn't progressed much past 1990.

That's actually pretty much what I'm talking about. But they barely seem to rate a mention. And Deathcore/New Wave Death Metal is usually done really well. Suicide Silence, Job For A Cowboy, The Black Dahlia Murder.

Layne Staley from Alice in Chains.

Not really a band with a definable overall style, but a lot of their stuff is very metal.
