Hello everyone! So I've had this idea of a slightly different way of playing games recently, particularly with games that are time based or have calendars in it. I thought that this would be a very interesting topic of discussion and am eager to listen to other people's opinion on this.
Basically, I've had this idea to actually follow along with the calendar that games provide you with and play them as if you were actually living those days. One good example would be something like Persona 3/4, where you essentially spend an entire year watching this story unfold. Another one would be The World Ends With You, where there are various levels that are sectioned off into "days." I think it would be an interesting experiment to actually follow along with the calendar, as in playing the September the 15th level on that actual day, then stop playing and continue on the next day.
Perhaps, depending on the length of the game, there might be some more emotional investment for the characters; maybe more empathy or simply more value for your money. Instead of powering through a game for a few weeks, to actually try and limit yourself to however that day might last seems like and interesting way to play.
I would like to provide some video playlist examples, using Persona 3/4:
Persona 3 FES Calendar Run (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrGj4f9e-x6LEH6qk-G7j9JBHqNZCNyDZ)
Persona 4 Golden Calendar Run (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrGj4f9e-x6JvaNPTK8JhVOHARh1Ke_NK)
FULL DISCLOSURE: Yes, those links belong to my Youtube channel for a series of videos I've been working on. Not trying to promote myself, but rather provide examples of what I've been trying to demonstrate, for I haven't really found anyone that has done this sort of thing.
So what you guys think? Is this an interesting way to play games, or not a deep enough idea to merit any significant attention? What other games would be more interesting to play if this type of "run" was implemented? Perhaps people that Livestream their stuff on Twitch might make good use of it. I recall Chuggaconroy doing an Animal Crossing series where he would make videos about certain holidays on the actual day of the holiday, which I thought was pretty cool.
I anxiously await your ideas and a fruitful discussion!
