I actually am watching anime and enjoying it...

My group of friends who are massive fans of anime/mange lent me some manga to read and I suprisingly enjoy it, I then started watching some of the anime and other stuff. I've been watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, Lucky Star and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and I'm really having a blast.

They have some suggested some themselves to watch like Angel Beats, Code Geass and Death Note and I personally have a real urge to watch Gundam Wing.

So i'm wondering what recommendations any of you could give? I don't really have preferences really at the moment so i'l try most things.

Well, you got most of the basics there already, Code Geass, Death Note, Evangelion, etc.

Add a few to that list, Cowboy Bebop, Baccano and if you want to dive into crazy awesome, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

You are not the only one my friend :)
Though the original Japanese one is a lot more risqué

Edit: If you're open-minded, Gravitation is pretty good, a bit more girly than others, also Chobits.

I'm guessing you're one of the people who watched the popular ones then assumed they're all crap.

I'd recommend Gundam 00 over Wing. 00 is kinda like a new Wing. Even I, someone who grew up on it mostly really enjoy it out of nostalgia. Besides the second half is a bit slow. But Wing is still certainly worth watching. Don't forget to watch the Endless Waltz movie after that.

I can add to the recommenedation of Death Note and Code Geass. Death Note I can get anyone to watch, and I imagine Code Geass is a good gateway from that because it's like Death Note with more anime cliches.

Funny thing, that Death note. I have managed to make several of my non-anime watching friends watch it.
There was this one guy who - when I mentioned anime - said "Anime? Isn't that, like, cartoon porn?". I made him watch the two first episodes, and a weekend later, he had finished it.

The problem with Code Geass is that it starts out pretty slow. One of the friends who I'd gotten to watch Death note was bored by it, and stopped watching. He came back a while later and noticed that things escalated from there though.

Well I love Gundam so I'd recommend Gundam Wing. Remember, it's older so it may feel slightly 'lame' at some points.

Definitely watch Death Note like they recommended.

I also love Ghost in the Shell SAC (NOTE: this is the TV series NOT the movies which I found fairly average)

Watch good, non-premade for America anime. Old anime, like Berserk and Guyver. Super, super old stuff isn't as great though, in my opinion. Like Mazinger Z and Astro Boy and such.

Also GANTZ.

FOR REALS.

Someone once asked me that exact question, and I said "No, that's hentai".
Where are people getting this idea that anime is porn? The Pokemon series is anime for God's sake.

Yh, I even got my friend who seems to hate anime being constantly mentioned, but seemingly having no reason for it, to watch Death Note and like it. But he's not going to watch anything after that. He also hates any kind of anime emoticon.

The first anime I ever watched was Fullmetal Alchemist. That show had everything, humour, drama, tragedy, and some of the most memorable characters I've ever come across.

Ghost in the Shell is indescribably, mindbogglingly good. I don't know enough words to do it justice.

I can't recommend either of those highly enough.

Fruits Basket. It's a charming, light-hearted anime that deals with the power of kindness and friendship. Given that it's meant for teenage girls, I went in in thinking I wouldn't like it (I'm a guy in my twenties). Turns out it really grew on me the more I watched it, and now it's my favorite anime. Yes it's kind of dumb and corny at times, but it has its share of emotional drama as well.

Unfortunately the show kind of ends on a cliffhanger, as the manga it was based on wasn't finished yet. There were plans to make a second season, but it fell through for various reasons. The good thing is that the manga is well worth checking out as well.

Also, Studio Ghibli's works are definitely worth checking out. My favorites are Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso and Kiki's Delivery Service.

Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, and Neon Genesis are all the peak of briliance in Anime/Manga history.

I have to say I like Haruhi Suzumiya the most, I got the dubbed disc, and when I first got the novel (Hurray for eBay) I also bought a Japanese dictionary. Reading it was almost impossible (Constantly having to switch from 2 books), but it was worth it. OoooOoooh. It was worth it...

My favourites are Full Metal Alchemist, Elfen Lied and Death Note. Also any of the Ghibli films!
My friends tried to get me into Bleach but it just hasn't happened despite watching a bunch of episodes. Im not really that big on anime. I also watched a couple FLCL and the animation was fun on that but i didnt get round to finishing it.

I confess I was a sucker for the earlier series' of Pokemon and Yugioh, I watched Yugioh gx as well but thought the third series was completely retarded. I do remember watching cardcaptors when it was on CITV years ago. These are the English dubs. I've never watched the originals which I hear are better. Especially Yugioh.
