The Internet: The Game

So this idea has been on my mind since reading on of the threads on "what would the internet look like if it was a physical place".

Does anyone else think that it could be possible to create a game out of this? The people in the thread made some decent points about how it would be a place with an extremely varied landscape.

Below is pretty much a mash up of most of the ideas along with a few of my own:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The entire internet exists as a plane, not a planet, extending exponentially in all directions. The edge of the world is completely blank (gotta have area for new websites and such to expand right?), however, the color of this blankness goes undefined. It could be white or black, it doesn't really matter.

There is a rapid transit system capable of taking you anywhere you want to go. It's known as the Google. Unfortunately, this system is subtly flawed and doesn't always take you where you want to go.

Now for the actual physical landscape.

The majority of the internet is a barren, garbage filled wasteland. Much of it is devoid of life aside from the smaller forums and such which would act as suburbs to the major forums. At this point, you would probably imagine some kind of giant gleaming futuristic city. No, quite the opposite, they may have been futuristic and clean at some point but years of mistreatment and stupid people have made the once proud forums of the internet rundown areas of decay. The aforementioned suburbs are in an even worse state of disrepair. The absolute worst areas of corrosion and scum are known as "4chans". Each city has one. Fortunately there is one area in each city that has been properly maintained. This is known as the Admin tower. Each one tower holds the majority of the city's residents and is a safe zone due to the special task force assigned to protect the citizens of the internet, they are known as "The Ban Hammer". Living outside of the Admin tower is a dangerous choice. Large numbers of vicious trolls wait to pray on the innocent. Those who bait the trolls are generally thrown out of civilized society as they are just as bad as the creatures they goad.

While much of the population of the internet resides in these forums, there are some areas outside of the forums that are inhabited by semi-sentient beasts. These are scientific experiments gone wrong. In an attempt to create a being who would produce only beautiful works, internet scientists accidentally created a race of monsters known as the "deviants". They work day and night in an attempt to create something that everyone will like, but usually turn out mediocre pieces of shit that only their deviant mothers would like. The experiment wasn't a total failure though as they do occasionally make something worthwhile. These pieces of art are held deep within their subterranean dwellings, and are guarded fiercely.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok so that's what I have cranked out so far. Any thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

EDIT: I'm not specifying the type of game this is, it could be an RTS, FPS, MMO, RPG or anything else you might think of.

4chan would be an underground bar where pictures of little girls are posted on a bulletin board. To enter, you need to be wearing a guy fawkes mask and a three wolves moon t-shirt, or be moot.
No no no, that'd be 12chan... or is it 20chan? There's too many different chans!

I think you could make a film out of this. A very good film if you write up a script and shop it around to various people.

And said bar would be run by Moot The Little Girl.

How about, each site is a guild, and the bigger the guild the more influence it has, or more hate it has, depending on what it is.

First thing I thought of as well. Granted, The Game [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Game_%28mind_game%29] is crap.

It's not our fault. The original poster should have titled it "The Internet: The Game" and not "The Internet, The Game."

So, Internet: The Game. Well, honestly, the Internet isn't that far from a game already. Why dumb it down?

Ok so I like the 4chan as an underground thingy, not just a bar, but an entire network under the forum cities.

The Guilds thing for each site would be a bit too many, but for the really big ones like MySpace and Facebook, that could be interesting. Two guilds with the same purpose, constantly fighting to establish dominance. I like it. Possibly one or two other social networking sites could get in on it as well.

I am loving this idea.
There'd be bordellos in every town, as the Internet is made up of porn sites.
There would be noobs, trolls, whores, oldfags, LOLcats, Grammar Nazis, everyone!
The sheer amazingness of this idea, even as a possibility, is tremendous.

First thought; FFFFUUUUU-

second thought; I like OP's ideas, you could have Google as a hub, a futuristic version of the London Tube, or popular websites such as Facebook appearing as the emerald castle from the wizard of Oz, shielding inhabitants from the cruel wasteland of roaming Viruses (Viri?) and the fabled "hackers on steroids" that are /b/tards.

There is much potential here. I likey.

I still like the idea of facebook and myspace as guilds, but that could definitely work. Each of the guilds could have some kind of huge stronghold where their population lives. You've also added /b/tards to my list of monsters :)

here's some of the in-game cities that I had some ideas for.

The Escapist - A massive city populated almost entirely by more intelligent folk, with only a handfull of trolls, all scattered throughout the city.

The Middle Ground - A central city containing portals to and from various locations in the internet. Contains many spriters that will help you customize your appearance by making new outfits for you. Also contains warriors that will teach you ways to fend off trolls, many of which have their own unique style.

The Nintendo Independant Wiki Alliance (NIWA) - Formerly four seperate cities, they later joined together to form one massive city. Originially the cities of Fantendo, Super Mario Wiki, Bulbapedia, and Zeldapedia. Mostly the more intelligent folk, a few trolls and idiots. Four named NPC's from the Mariowikian and Fantendoan districts (one being myself) are former trolls. These NPC's (excluding myself) will teach you how to disguise yourself among trolls. Like the Middle Ground, it also has spriters, and, though they work quicker and for less money, most of them aren't as skilled as the ones in the Middle Ground

And some services provided by NPC's

Transport between certain locations - Certain NPC's will help you travel between different locations. The current transporters are:
KP Shadow (myself) - brings you between The Escapist, The Middle Ground, and the various districts of the NIWA

Battle Trainers - teach you different fighting styles that can be used against Trolls.

Stealth Trainers - Train you to hide among trolls.

Informants - Give you information on weaknesses of different varieties of trolls. Also give you blueprints for different weapons and clothing designs that you can bring to Spriters

Spriters - Can make you new outfits and weapons.

I hadn't lost in ages!

On topic: I suppose Google must be a freaking Metropolis. With lots of ads and lots of people coming and going. Heh. Maybe 'metropolis' isn't the right word. More like 'oracle'.
