So this idea has been on my mind since reading on of the threads on "what would the internet look like if it was a physical place".
Does anyone else think that it could be possible to create a game out of this? The people in the thread made some decent points about how it would be a place with an extremely varied landscape.
Below is pretty much a mash up of most of the ideas along with a few of my own:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The entire internet exists as a plane, not a planet, extending exponentially in all directions. The edge of the world is completely blank (gotta have area for new websites and such to expand right?), however, the color of this blankness goes undefined. It could be white or black, it doesn't really matter.
There is a rapid transit system capable of taking you anywhere you want to go. It's known as the Google. Unfortunately, this system is subtly flawed and doesn't always take you where you want to go.
Now for the actual physical landscape.
The majority of the internet is a barren, garbage filled wasteland. Much of it is devoid of life aside from the smaller forums and such which would act as suburbs to the major forums. At this point, you would probably imagine some kind of giant gleaming futuristic city. No, quite the opposite, they may have been futuristic and clean at some point but years of mistreatment and stupid people have made the once proud forums of the internet rundown areas of decay. The aforementioned suburbs are in an even worse state of disrepair. The absolute worst areas of corrosion and scum are known as "4chans". Each city has one. Fortunately there is one area in each city that has been properly maintained. This is known as the Admin tower. Each one tower holds the majority of the city's residents and is a safe zone due to the special task force assigned to protect the citizens of the internet, they are known as "The Ban Hammer". Living outside of the Admin tower is a dangerous choice. Large numbers of vicious trolls wait to pray on the innocent. Those who bait the trolls are generally thrown out of civilized society as they are just as bad as the creatures they goad.
While much of the population of the internet resides in these forums, there are some areas outside of the forums that are inhabited by semi-sentient beasts. These are scientific experiments gone wrong. In an attempt to create a being who would produce only beautiful works, internet scientists accidentally created a race of monsters known as the "deviants". They work day and night in an attempt to create something that everyone will like, but usually turn out mediocre pieces of shit that only their deviant mothers would like. The experiment wasn't a total failure though as they do occasionally make something worthwhile. These pieces of art are held deep within their subterranean dwellings, and are guarded fiercely.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok so that's what I have cranked out so far. Any thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?
EDIT: I'm not specifying the type of game this is, it could be an RTS, FPS, MMO, RPG or anything else you might think of.
