Many of you will have seen the news that Rotten Tomatoes had to close the comments for upcoming film 'The Dark Knight Rises' due to death threats that some users were making aimed at reviewers who didn't like the film.

The questions I would ask are why do these films provoke such an extreme reaction? And why is it that these films ('The Dark Khight' in particular) are so revered by so many people online?

When I first saw 'The Dark Knight' I enjoyed it, it has some excellent performances and great action scenes. It perhaps wasn't quite as interesting a film as some of Nolan's earlier work such as 'Momento', and at two and a half hours it is possibly a bit too long but I definately liked it. The critics seemed to agree as it gained many positive reviews.

Large numbers of people online saw things differently though, they seemed to see it as the greatest film of all time, a kind of 'Citizen Kane' for a new generation. What is it about this film that provokes this almost religious level of worship among its fans?

The movie has a damn martyr in the form of Heath Ledger. There are hardly any other movies with quite the same circumstances. That, and it's just a really good fucking movie, are my guesses.

You're looking for reason in the actions of people who give death threats over movie reviews?

...

Fine. Here's a reason. Lots of people on the internet are in desperate need of a life and subsequently have no sense of scale or perspective.

Plus, y'know, anonymity and all that jazz.

Works of art tend to have very profound effects on peoples' lives, or at least that is what those people think.
Really though, I not too sure why you care about some publicity stunt Rotten Tomatoes is dressing up as a concern for reviewer safety. I thought the consensus was that by now their name is extremely appropriate when considering the current quality of that site.
