The Last Of Us Review Hate

Is anyone able to explain to me how users of websites such as Gamespot and Polygon can deal so much hate to the reviewers giving The Last Of Us a sub-10 score? The game hasn't even been released worldwide yet, and anyone who gives it a score lower than 10 is instantly demonized and are decried as an attention seeker. To me, a score of 10 implies absolute perfection in a video game, and should rarely be given, almost never. I don't understand how users can savage these reviewers before they even got a chance to play it themselves.

After the influx of hate, this video comes to mind:

So what's everyone else's standpoint on this? I won't even be able to play TLOU due to only having a PC, but I find it interesting, regardless.

(This is the Gamespot review which is under question http://uk.gamespot.com/the-last-of-us/reviews/the-last-of-us-review-6409197/ )

People are idiots and when someone/something they like doesn't get a perfect score they revolt.

It's happened for basically any major game release since the internet was invented, not sure why you're surprised about this now.

Fanboys man, just... fanboys.

It's happened before and it goes both ways. Sometimes you get this, where people claim that bad reviews are being given for page-views and sometime you get people raging about a game being reviewed too well and how ooobviously the reviewers were all bribed and so on and so forth.

This is the first time I've noticed it particularly. It has happened to other games, of course. Bioshock: Infinite was a rather large example. However, with Infinite, I didn't particularly seem to notice this until AFTER the game was released. If anyone even stated anything negative about the game, outrage occurred.

Game ratings are massively inflated now, I still consider anything above a 5/10 to be above average, and I'll give it a play. This mentality serves me well occasionally, but not all the time.

First of all, I agree with your sentiment. Hating on reviewers just because they give a score below 10 is absolutely ridiculous.

But, I have to say that the notion that 10s should never be given is absolutely ridiculous (In my opinion, of course). Why even have a scale of 1-10 if you are not allowed to give a game the highest score? A 10 does in no way indicate that it is a "perfect game", because as you said, there's no such thing. It just means that it is absolutely top tier and among the best games in its genré. Noone complains when movies are given 5/5 stars, but shouldn't the same apply there in that case?

It's a Naughty Dog game. After Uncharted this game was bound to have fanboys the moment it was announced.

Well how would you feel if someone told you that the thing you shelled out 60 bucks on preordering wasn't the child of pure distilled awesomeness and the rapture itself?

Really, I mostly think it comes down to purchase justification and rationalization. People hate having doubts raised about their purchases.

Meh, maybe people are upset that this game got a worse score than the CoDs or Halos which routinely get very high scores.

It's crazy to get so obsessed with scores and a review is just an opinion anyway. People often go to reviews to search for validation on their own opinion and when they don't find it they get upset.

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD UP EVERYONE!

The reason why everyone is hating on the Gamespot review is because he stated that the AI of a certain enemy is broken.

In the video he states that he is able to walk passed certain enemies and claimed it as broken AI.
But if he payed attention to the game and knew how to play. He would known those enemies are known as Clickers and can only see by sound. They are blind. They can't see physically.

That's why people are pissed off so before you to make a topic about something. Please understand the topic.

Yeah, that sounds like a slight over sight on the reviewers part. A lot of us knew that information after the trailer so it's surprising the reviewer didn't even know about it.

The problem with the five-star system for movies is that there aren't any particular 'in-betweens'. If you compared a sample group of movies with the two reviewing systems, you'll most likely see that there are plenty of 5 star reviews, compared to very little 10/10 reviews. I know that both of them basically mean the same thing, but I hope you understand what I'm getting at. I don't mind scores of 10 being given, but I'll emphasise 'almost never'.

The current inflation which has occurred recently has resulted in most releases getting solid 9+ reviews. This leaves little room for potential customers to decipher which games are worth purchasing and which aren't. I'm personally hoping for something to kick the industry a bit, to make them realise that Metacritic is not everything, and anything above an 8 should be considered a very good/great game.

And that slight over sight is actually a major part of the game. If the AI is broken why play the game?
So this misinformation could heavily damage the game sells. But luckily enough people knew about it to call gamespot on their bullshit. Which is justified. Broken AI can tarnish a game pretty badly.

That's a fair enough point actually. And yes, review score inflations has become a problem. Like I said, I think reviewers should be allowed to use the entire scale, but sadly that doesn't seem like it's the case anymore. A 7 is usually considered mediocre, while it in reality should be considered a good game of it's genré. Hopefully that'll change in the future, but I'm not holding out any particular hope...

Just look at average user score at metacritic. It is either 10 or 1. That's it. There's no longer 1 to 10 scale, where 1-4 is bad, 5-6 is average and forgetable, 7-9 is very good and worth buying, and 10 is amazing. It's now 10-good, 1-bad. That's fucking it.
<img src=http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b378/omarfw123/13151596601392.png>
On a related note, am I the only one who thinks that 10 is not supposed to mean perfect? For me 10 means that game is so freaking good, that you're willing to ignore most negative parts. At Destructoid both Persona 3: FES and Persona 3: Portable have 10/10 even though gameplay and content vise Portable is superior version. Same goes with Persona 4 and Persona 4: Golden. Persona 4: Golden being the ultimate version in terms of gameplay is still far from being perfect and there are many issues that are addressed in the review.

Well, it wouldn't be that big of a deal if we didn't have to recently deal with Aliens Colonial Marines.

Just for comparison, the NeoGAF review thread for Uncharted 3. [http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=32102086&postcount=3251]

It's people like these that guarantee games like Grand Theft Auto 4 will get a 98 on Metacritic. (Even if you like Grand Theft Auto 4, that score is still freaking hilarious)
