Every now and again, something appears in a game that just confounds us so much we have no idea how to overcome it.

It could be a ridiculously tough boss fight, an oblique puzzle, a maze -like level you can't navigate your way out of or just Mile High Club on Veteran...

When there really is no other option, we must swallow our pride and look to our old friend Google.

I shall start us off with a few of my own:

Shadow of the Colossus
Shamefully, I had to use walkthroughs for 4 of the colossi. I was awful at that game.

Mirrors Edge:
On the ship, in a room where you climb a bunch of pipes and have to wall run, then jump sideways and backwards onto a red bar.

Was stuck on that for 2 hours.

Ballad of Gay Tony
That utterly horrible chopper/ boat-chase mission

When was the last time you resorted to a walkthrough?

What was the game, and what was the section you got hopelessly stuck on?

Final Fantasy X

To find out the stats off the Dark Aeons.
Which promptly made me respond with this single word: "Fuck..."
And to help my Celestial weapon hunt.

Batman: Arkham Asylum. I just couldn't find those last Joker Teeth. Turns out you have to clock the bastard first, then go back for the teeth.

I'm using one right now for Super Mario Galaxy in order to locate all the hidden green stars. Seriously, they take forever to locate otherwise.

Don't feel too bad, that game had some brutally difficult moments. I admit I had to use a guide for the 15th colossi.

I usually only use them for RPGs, but for christmas I got Halo 3 ODST, and it's strategy guide, so since it's there I'll probably use it.

I used it for about 40 of them - other than that, I haven't used a guide since I was about 8.

If someone could tell me where the fun is in being told how to do things I'd love to know.

The other day I saw someone talk about how they were so passionate about a game they read every guide and all the hints and tips for it; surely if you were the passionate, you'd work it out for yourself?

I used one for Mass Effect, I remember being lost at a few points doing the side mission grind and the Wiki had tons of helpful info.

I've also always used guides for the Pokemon games. Then again, I feel that those games almost necessitate a guide or walkthrough of some sort. No way anyone could just pick it up and find everything without a LOT of trial and error and exploration.

It was pretty brutal alright. I had a much more enjoyable experience with Ico, which was a cakewalk in comparison.

The colossus surrounded by water jets was bloody hard even after consulting a walkthrough.

And the last one... well... lets just say it took a looong time.

That is not really cheating, as I imagine you did that in order to avoid great boredom.

I quit the game at that point and told it to go fuck itself up its stern.
