While I have nothing against the idea of new characters I think the best idea would be to still make the old characters playable (give you a greater choice).

Bill did say 'I'll see peace back on Earth if I have to kill each one of these bastards with my bare hands!' after all...Earth is a big place and it probably has lot's of zombies.

The comparisons you've made are rather interesting. Regardless, wasn't this done before? There were a TON of L4D2 threads a while back, and I find it hard to believe that this wasn't one of them.

Ah well, since I wasn't posting much during that time I'll post my opinion now: I really don't see the problem. I'll be playing as Uncle Phil 90% of the time anyway.
