Games are frequently disappointing. It's a fact of people having different tastes or developers dropping the ball. It's unreasonable to expect that everyone will like a given game. Disclaimer out of the way what the hell is with the entire Escapist community (and IGN, Gamespot, NEOGaf etc.) and their group hate-on for Other M. AS someone who completed the game multiple times it becomes clear that most haters never actually sat down with the game and bothered to give it a chance. They saw the Zero Punctuation review and immediately wrote it off.

In reality the game is great looking, well paced and has fantastic 3rd person combat (considering the primary weapon is a projectile). There camrea is never an issue which is remarkable given that the game essentially uses a nes controller and a zapper. The story wan't even that bad, toss aside some anemic VO and a wordy script and you have a perfectly serviceable Aliens clone that never really intrudes on the game.

I realize that almost no one shares this opinion but almost all evidence to the contrary is given as: "Samus is a submissive woman (not true) the entire game sucks and her previous character (nonexistant) is retroactively ruined"

Disagree, well you're entitled to your opinion but I'd like to hear what this giant secret injustice the game has committed.

First of all no game needs a "defence thread" because whether a game is good or not is entirely subjective.

While I do agree that a lot of people will have written the game off thanks to Yahtzee, this is by no means an isolated game in that regard. How often did you see the words "generic" and "mediocre" before he used them? Some people will be influenced by his opinions, and others will simply not like the game because of their own.

The fact is that not everyone is going to like the games you do, and the people who don't like them are not always going to have logical reasons for their opinions.

There really is no point getting yourself worked up about it, you still like the game and that's all that should matter. After all, it's your time and money spent playing it, so screw what everyone else thinks.

Was it a terrfic game? No. Is it a horrible game? No, I enjoyed it for what it was, a 3rd person jumpy shooter, reminiscient of the older Metroid games. Sure, the story was a little too melodramatic, and very Japanese soap drama, but they didn't really ruin Samus' character because she never actually had one to begin with. She's up there with Master Chief and Gordon Freeman, in the group of characters that people fanwank over simply because they're 'badass' and that's it.
