It looks like Kris Marshall will be the new doctor.

http://metro.co.uk/2017/03/04/bookies-suspend-betting-on-kris-marshall-taking-over-from-peter-capaldi-in-doctor-who-6488462/

I thought the producers would go for an younger, relatively unknown actor, like when they cast Matt Smith.

Doesn't look like it at all, it's bookies speculation for betting. He's as likely to be the new doctor as much as any of the other actors the rumour mill churns out. Not really fussed who gets the role really. As long as they don't bow to pressure and cast a female doctor. If they want to have a female timelord, just have another spin-off series.

I haven't watch mountains of Who myself, but my girlfriend got me into it. I really liked a good chunk of the old episodes. My first Nu Who was Capaldi's first season, and I thought it was just awful. Mainly because of Clara (just didn't like the character, and she seemed to be the focus of most episodes and screen time. It's like they weren't confident in Capaldi's doctor at all).

Who?
The only 2 things i know him from are as Nick from My Family, and the druggy guy in Death at a Funeral (The Brit version). He was in loads of BT adverts.. A decade ago or so? Sure he's been in loads more, but that's the only places I've seen him.

I know who he is as well - I was making a pun. :(

But I do know him from Death in Paradise and he's decent there, even if I prefer Poole, so I could see him making a good Doctor.

Kris Marshall is leaving a series he stars in (Death in Paradise) this year, so to me that lends a bit of weight to the rumour.

Call me when the retcon the entirety of the current Doctor's series as having been a simulation or whatever so we can all pretend it doesn't exist and make the show the better for it.

God they had such a great cast an they had to ruin it with genuinely terrible writing so bad I'd frankly not let my kids watch it in its current state. Wouldn't want little Timmy thinking all women are cunts after all.

Seriously, does the BBC's writing staff have a union like teachers in the States where you'd have to literally commit a crime to have any hope of being fired? Because outright incompetence sure doesn't cut it.

I feel the same way about Sherlock sometimes. At least Elementary has a reason for Watson. There are so many shows with bad writing, Doctor is somewhere in the middle of the pack. There is so much worse out there.

Is Moffat still the showrunner?
Is the show still having the companions be the "emotional centre" of the Doctor while they're really being judgemental self-absorbed jerks?
Have we left the whole "Death of the Doctor" plotline yet?
If so I don't care.

(Seriously, I don't know if they're still doing that, I stopped watching a couple of yeras ago).

Yes, but only for one more series.

Yes, but the Doctor is also a judgemental self-absorbed jerk these days.

Possibly, it's hard to say since the plots are incomprehensible.

*sigh*
Just once I'd like the cynical side of me to be completely wrong.
Guess this is at least one more series I'll be skipping.
Still haven't bothered catching up on the latest season of Sherlock either...

Is Coleman really not in the running anymore?

Having Soph as the Doctor is probably one of the only things that could have brought me back to that dreaded show.

If the BBC do want to go for a female Doctor, I think Gemma Whelan might be a good choice. She's got the background of comedy performances, but has been appearing in more serious content in the past couple of years.

I'd like Nicola Walker.

Probably going to be called a sexist, but I really don't want a female Doctor.

I know there's now precedent, what with Rassilon and the Master becoming "Missy," but as fun as the latter could be, I still found it offputting - just as offputting as I'd find it if, say, Romana regenerated into a male Time Lord. If anything, I feel it does disservice to "Missy's" character that she IS the same individual as the Master, rather than being her own character.

And before you say "but Hawki, you liked Ghostbusters 2016 and its all female cast," I don't consider that gender flipping, it's simply different characters taking on the same role, not altering the actual characters to take on new roles. But while the Doctor's personality has fluxuated between incarnations, his gender hasn't.

The Master was an egotistical yet rational super villain obsessed with gaining power.

Missy is an crazy stalker who is obsessed with the Doctor, just like all the other female characters are obsessed with the Doctor.

To me it's obvious that the gender switch didn't work in this instance, and the original character was lost.
