Since Pokemon Black and White is coming to steal our souls I figured I'd bring up something my girlfriend never stops talking about.... Never.... -_-;;

The Nuzlocke challenge is a special set of voluntary rules to follow that makes the relatively easy pokemon games much more of an ordeal.

Rule 1: You may only catch the first pokemon you encounter in each area

Rule 2: If your pokemon is ever KOed, then you must consider them DEAD. Store or release them, you can never use them again.

Additional optional rules include no legendaries, no master balls, and no healing items (for the truly hard core)

Following these rules, you have a limited number of random pokemon who you are completely dependent on. Not only does this make the game far more challenge, almost impossible in fact, but people become much more attached to their poke.

Many people create short webcomics based on their play through. Most of which are intentionally hilarious and utterly bizarre.

And some are actually quite dramatic and sad. Here is a video my class mate made when her Voltorb, who could only communicate through music, died. His name was Rick, he liked to use Rollout attack. Sadly, Rick's Rolling came to and end one day.

I've never found Nuzlocke runs appealing for me to try, as I hate Rule 1.
I've never tried it myself. Mostly because I'm too lazy to transfer all my stuff and start a new game. I think I will for Black and White though.

I always buy both versions of each game, so I've always got a cart to spare if I want to restart without transferring pokemon.

It's not like I can wait for a price drop to get the other versions. Pokemon games never get those...So, I always buy both on Day One.

I myself have never tried a Nuzlocke run and probably never will.

That video, however, made me start to tear up.

Nuzlocking requires a lot of grinding. A lot of "safe" grinding. Basically, when I do it, if my pokemon takes any damage at all in battle, I head back to town and heal up immediately after the battle.

I can't do it. I prefer to think of other ways to enrich my playstyle.

We're VERY much looking forward to the release. I'm not as much into pokemon as she is but I'm a tailor and it gives me an excuse to design and wear a pokemon hat. I'll be sporting and Haunter, she wants a Shinx. Since I'm known for making geek clothing I get commissions for pokemon hats all the time but this will be the first time I've worn one myself.

I would try and eventually give up because if I did follow the rules, I would have the starter and like five f*cking raticates. Pissing me off with those damn rats.

I remember nuzlocking FireRed and remembering it was insanely hard considering what you had to go against later on the in game. Although Black and White looks like it will be insanely easy to nuzlocke based on what I've seen from videos, if you plan to do so anyways.

I heard about these rules a while ago, but it doesn't sound like it's for me.

They did cause me to consider replaying Red version mixing things up a bit though; Only using 3 battle pokemon and releasing/permanently storing the oldest one after each Gym Leader.

I really want to Nuzlocke b/w but my favorite pokemon is in it. Bachuru.... err... or as it's been painfully been renamed Joltik.

I'm scared to death of spiders so I have no idea why I love this thing so much.

Not my style.

If you find this fun, that's fine. I'm not one for this kind of challenge.

The one thing I wish Pokemon would do is give you the option of keeping your pokemon looking the same when they evolve. Some pokemon look butt ugly when they evolve but you also want the increase in stats. Can't we have them both cute and useful??

The fact your avi is Stephen Fry has convinced me to watch this.
Plus it sounds like an interesting idea (so long as you cut out the grind)

Some of the grind is included, but most of it is in montages. Also, there's not much of it. I like a challenge!
And it's good to see Steven has been of use.

Sounds like your girlfriend was trying to splice Fire Emblem with Pokemon. Inform her that the Pokemon NPCs aren't interesting enough to attempt that.

I would like to try the Nuzlocke challenge, but I really don't want to start a new game on my Pokemon Blue game, especially after all the work I did on it.

I have a harder variant:

1. You're not allowed to ever enter a Pokémon center (and avoid all other healing sources if possible) or Pokémart, except for events when it's absolutely necessary to advance the plot (Pokémon Red/Blue to get the PARCEL, Pokémon Gold/Silver to get the EGG).
2. When you do have to go into a Pokécenter or Pokémart, you're not allowed to actually use the services.
3. When you faint, it's over.

The other Nuzlocke rules don't apply. Just those 3.

Furthest I've ever gotten was 3 badges in Blue - couldn't manage to earn the 4th. Can anyone do better?

It's not something she came up with. If you click on the link to the Nuzlocke webcomics you'll see tons of people do this.
