i was on digg last night and came across this article

http://furiousfanboys.com/2010/10/ea-developer-old-republic-will-be-one-of-the-greatest-failures-in-the-history-of-mmos/

now im taking what this dude says, with a grain of salt, considering hes getting laid off. however, it would be very fanboyish for me to just assume hes bitter and everything he said is a lie. i have been waiting for the old republic mmo for a long time. ive been excited for it long before i played the kotor games. i honestly wasnt a fan of either kotor games, but i really want a star wars mmo (and dont mention galaxies, because i try to pretend that game never happened). im sure theres truth and misinformation in what he said but its enough to get me worried that this game might not be as worth the wait as i thought it would be

I said that two years and $30 million ago.

All the signs are already there. Jedi/Sith from start, huge trailers with no gameplay, roughshod use of canon.

Sorry Star Wars fans, this is gonna crash like the Death Star.

During the course of 6 films, the Death Star never "crashed"

Need I remind folks of APB? 90 days to beat.

I hope that this game actually succeeds, because I don't think that Bioware's ever had a failure before, and I've got my fingers crossed for them. Anyway, that article is rubbish - it's just a guy yelling and making a big fuss because he was laid off. While on-rails space combat does sound a little stupid, it could still work. Also, $300 million being dropped on this game? Rubbish, bullshit and all sorts of other nasty things.
Anyway, there's no guarantee that TOR will be any good, but let's give it a chance, shall we?

*For the record, TOR will never top WoW, so why try?

Its not eve clear whether the guy who wrote it worked ever worked for ea.
He might be Fred from accounting who was bored for half an hour. Hell it might even be me or
this guy http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view
anyone who thinks even remotly critical should completly ignore that "information"
I could set up such a blog in a few minutes and even claim that im from blizzard and that wouldn't make Sc2 suck.

One part tells me he should be right because I know I will lose my Japanese girlfriend to this game but on the other hand I want BioWare to succeed what they are doing and I am opting for the latter option because sooner or later I will play the game myself as well!
Why was it relevant that she's Japanese?

In my opinion its gonna fail on account of being an MMO, the fact that its a star trek one is a bonus towards it (I've a problem with a sci-fi setting or an MMO, even more so if it doesn't take the same sort of approach as EVE Online). On the other hand I'm getting somewhat sick of developers smack talking each other, then again I didn't read that so its possible he was just being honest with people.

It's Bioware+Star Wars. It's going to sell regardless. The only question remains is if it'll survive long term.
The same can be said for KOTOR2. I really enjoyed the first one, but the sequel was a bit of a let down in my opinion. And there's some major bugs if you try to play it on a 360.

Hopefully there will be a WOW-style 10 day free trial so we all don't waste our money.

During the course of 6 films, the Death Star never "crashed"
crash: fall or come down violently; break violently or noisily; make a sudden loud sound; barge in: enter uninvited; undergo a sudden and severe downturn; stop operating;

Whether it has an exhaust port shot or not, I think it can be said to have "crashed" an awful lot.

Like this will.

Probably not as quick as APB, but way, WAY more damaging.

Impossible. Age of Conan was already released.
AoC is still going, still being supported and still drawing money.

Note: the full phrase reads "Old Republic will be one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs from EA." That hardly improves it, though, as EA probably has a medal for MMOs failures by now.

He might be biased and overly dramatic, but it's a good read and he might have a point. Voice work is, no doubt, a huge part of the budget and is, bizarrely, touted as a prime feature of the game, along with other things that are common to all BioWare's single-player games. Those are really great. Which brings us to my beef with The Old Republic: it looks like a great game, but so far it doesn't look very much like a MMO game, which is a rather important part of being a MMO game.

While I doubt it will crash and burn anything like Sims Online or APB, I'm certain it will be deemed a "failure" by many, for various reasons, regardless of its actual performance. It's too high profile to instantly super-fail and close down, so time only knows how it'll work out.

I doubt it will fail, but I'm getting about 10x the hype for it than I think it's going to deserve. Just wait for those crushed expectations to hit people in the face...

For reference, see SSBB.

Well he's deffinetly comming off as being bitter and resentful. There's always a grain of salt in every line of bullshit though.
I have no doubt it'll be at the least a competent game and much better than that-other-Star Wars MMo.
And let's face it. This is Bioware. They've never made a truly bad game. A few that were kinda bland(Shattered Steel and Neverwinter Nights, I'm looking at you) but they've never actually failed at making a competent game.
Of course, there's a first time for everything, but I honestly think that, from what gameplay I've seen, this game will at the least feel like an online Mass Effect. And I'm kinda ok with that.

Sorry, Bioware were not responsible for KOTOR2, Obsidian were the devs.
Ahh, well that explains it then!
