Hiya guys.
I'm mainly a guy who listens only rock and metal music, and I used to be one of those assholes who claim that their music is the "right" music. I used to badmouth everything else. But, now I have seen the light.
A while back I heard a bunch of awesome songs that weren't from my genre. And I understood that I shouldn't limit myself only to rock and metal, but instead I should just listen music that I enjoy.
The thing is, I have no idea where to start, as almost all my friends listen rock/metal, and I need help. My wish is that you people could give me artists and/or songs that I should try, that you personally enjoy. I am open to everything except Rihanna/Madonna/Katey Perry/Lady Gaga style R&B music(I'm not ready for such a leap yet, but maybe one day).

Thank you in advance.

These are, in my opinion, pretty much the most honest and hard-working bands still working today.

Also, for less rock, check out

Ah, I used to be that way too.. I started off into heavier metal and lighter rock to indie.. And then I found post-rock! :D

Sleepmakeswaves, Pelican, and Jakob are all brilliant post-rock bands.

And another recommendation (indie), Elliott Smith. RIP.

Another by Elliott Smith, with some L4D gameplay from scrims if you're willing to watch..

I know where you're coming from man, every now and then I try to expand my musical horizons but rock is my true love. Having said that, I also listen to things like the Rat Pack and Hammock.

Rob Dougan is always[footnote]and by always I mean there is always 1 song from him that somebody will like[/footnote] good. A mix of Orchestral and other instrements with his deep rough voice. They work so well together. And if you want something different Atlas Plug is good. Electronic with a bunch of instruments with a good beat. Give them a listen.

Glad you've seen the light, mate. Sounds a lot like how I used to be; an evangelical rock/metal obsessive. :p Now I listen to blues, jazz, rap and classical music... and I feel much more free being able to flit between genres. :)

Try some Interpol. I recommend anything from their first two albums.

If you like them, try some Editors too. They're similar in sound, but whereas Interpol are American, Editors are distinctly English and with that bring their own flavour; all sparse guitar and addictive bass hooks. Quite dark, forboding alternative rock. It's not what I'd call 'downer' music though, despite that description. 'Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors' and 'An End Has a Start' (both from the second album) are very anthemic. A further band to try for a similar feel is White Lies. 'To Lose My Life', 'Taxidermy' and 'Death' are probably their best songs.

Also, have you heard Them Crooked Vultures? Their album is, for my money, one of the best rock albums of last year. Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) all in one group. :D

Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster are great. Really energetic, sort of gothy, punky alternative rock. The first album is quite intense, the second and third are more 'commercial' but no less brilliant.

Mastodon are one of the best metal bands working today. The Crack the Skye album in particular is mindblowing. 'The Czar' is just incredible.

For blues, listen to John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, BB King... so much soul, and feel. Stevie Ray Vaughan was an amazing blues guitarist/singer, too. If you want more acoustic blues, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac are a good choice.

Crystal Castles do some really good electronic music. Henry Homesweet too, he does chiptune (music using soundbites ripped from a Gameboy).

As for rap: Nas (NY State of Mind is lyrically fantastic and has an addictive beat), Ice Cube (The original version of Check Yo self- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmHkPXZMlts - is impossible not to move to), anything by Tupac. Hail Mary is a good 'Pac song to start with, it's the first one I heard by him.

Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo5GcYeh7XA So fucking smooth. Having a bad day? Put this on. Shit just rolls right off.

Errrrrm.... I'm really, really tired right now man. Brain's fried. I'll probably come up with more when I can think properly. :p
