So, I haven't seen any discussion about The Secret World on here since around the end of February. I was wondering what the general feeling was from you guys about the game, and whether there was likely to be a range of people playing it, or if other online games such as Guild Wars 2 or TERA were more likely to draw the MMO crowd?

Myself, I was quite interested in the concept when I first heard about it but I'd like to see some more recent gameplay footage. I believe the open beta is starting this weekend so hopefully there will be some more details out around then.

Like you i was also quite interested in the premise of the game, that is untill i found out later that half the stuff i thought would be possible simply isnt, coupled by later seeing some game footage led me to the conclusion that it looks utterly generic and not worth my time.

I'm intrigued, if only for the interesting premise and the fact Ragnar Tornquist is involved. Gameplay doesn't look particularly interesting and I'm no longer really interested in any sort of pvp or raiding system. My tolerance for that sort of gameplay is long gone and with it most of my desire to play MMO of any sort.

That said I do like the idea of mysteries and puzzled that need solving being integrated into the quest design, plus the no-levels thing is intriguing. I've absolutely no doubt that a few months after the games released all the quests will have been solved and neatly sorted into a wiki for future players while all the skills and talents will have been number crunched for the inevitable mandatory character builds...

But for those first few months before all that happens, hmm, could be interesting. I'm still debating with myself whether it's something I want to be a part of or not, but it should be interesting.

I was really looking forward to this. But i'm put off by the obnoxious amount of preorder bonuses and the fact that it'd be another subscription to pay for.

I've heard that beta build in PAX was terrible.

I think if the game was a Singleplayer RPG and the Liam Neeson looking character was playable, it would have been pretty cool.

Seems generic and shallow, but i saw it at origins for 49 bucks and couldn't resist buying it. Guess ill find out if it's worth paying a sub or not in the beta. Also... thaks for the heads up, kinda forgot i had this beta going :p

None of those bonuses will ever see use beyond the first 2 hours of the game. I assure you this.
You do realize that the bonuses include gametime, permanent item discount and the possibility of never paying monthly fees again just among other things right?

I think what you meant is "the in game items you can get as bonuses will be replaced soon", but that is not the biggest lure of the upgrade packs mate, not by a long shot.

Eh, not interested in MMOs. They have no narrative weight and the gameplay always lacks any sense of immediacy. However, if I was into the genre I would still give this one a miss.

The game has an initial box price, a subscription price and microtransactions. In my eyes that's a death blow.

Besides, from what I've seen it's visually and thematically a bit of a mess.

I'm a bit interested, especially since they stray away from the rest of the MMO's by using something more similar to Guild Wars (1) skill system. Instead of having 50 different skills to choose from at the same time, you get to pick only a few to bring into battle.

And just the fact that I can actually wear whatever I think my character look good in is a plus. I hate having to look retarded until I find a cool outfit for my character, only because it's better.

I'll be trying the beta weekend out with a few friends, then we'll see. If you haven't already, grab a free beta key from Gamespot here: http://www.gamespot.com/event/codes/secret-world-pc/

Sounds interesting but not interesting enough to buy at full price.

Which is why Asda fucking up and listing it to pre-order for £5 is good for me, since I have now pre-ordered the game and their price promise means they can't back out and try charging me full price.

Ya, that's called lifetime subscription, and from what I've heard, it's pretty damn expensive.

I think it could be worth checking out. Personally, I had a good experience with Age of Conan, so I don't have any issues with Funcom.
Think I'll be busy with GW2 though, so might check it out a few months after release.

260 bucks, also includes everything from every other upgrade pack. As for the price, well, I gave more to Blizz in monthly fees and a lot of people have payed as much in microtransactions in a couple of months; it's not that expensive, however it is high for an unreleased game, if it's amazingly good i'll get it, but don't think so because:

- The gameplay seems generic.
- There is no PvP (that i have heard of).
- The company seems greedy as fuck making it that you have to buy it, then pay monthly fees all while having a microtransaction system in place to sell you items.

Still, it seems interesting enough and with good art direction, we'll see this weekend.

Depends on what they sell in the shop, really.
If it's just vanity stuff, skins and effects, then I have no problems with it.
If they go sell gamechanging items and boosts, then they've gone too far.
