Hallo, first time poster here, I've watched the forums for a little bit and decided to join up, as I'm a free thinking individual who doesn't buy into trends. HERE'S ANOTHER TOP 5!
But anyway, I want to know what you thought was the most disappointing, not games that were overly bad, just ones that didn't live up to your expectations and you left with a sour taste at the end of it.
My top 5 is.
Dishonored
I was really looking forward to this one, I saw all the previews, promos etc and I was thinking, ''yep, game of the year right there.'' I bought it quite soon after it came out and started out really enjoying the game. But it had ''two glaring errors'' (alan partridge quote) it's binary moral choice system and the characterisation, also the ending (ok 3 errors screw you guys).
With the binary moral choice I was going for a low chaos play through, I felt really compelled not to kill anyone because I knew there were two different endings, because I didn't really kill anyone I didn't unlock any aggressive cool powers like rat swarm and just put people to sleep instead, it sucked the action and fun out of the game for me.
The characterisation was rather hollow as well (yes ''rather'' i'm from the south of england give me a break), from the main 'goodies' point of view that is, the assassination targets all seemed quite sinister and definitely made me feel they deserved a knife sandwich in their chops but with the side I was on it was a little bit ''go there, do this, do that'' with no building of character, I could barely tell apart those two navy guys unless their actual names popped up because they were so similar.
Of course there was the ending, too abrupt, kind of seemed half assed and rushed, I got the good ending so it just ended with pretty much ''they lived happily ever after.'' Felt very anti climactic, I tried another playthrough on high chaos but the fun had gone because I knew I was going to get a stale ending.
Assassins Creed 3
Much easier this one, zero punctuation sums it up pretty well to explain my gripes with it. I did like the story and the main character Connor, though he was no ezio. The landscape and setting was not fun enough to enjoy. I do love a bit of exploring on games like Skyrim and Dark Souls because there is always some treasure and box of goodies that you can snoop around for. For ARSEassins Creed 3 (lol amirite?!) the frontier was pretty bland because it's just a load of tree climbing, interesting at first but didn't hold much for me as the game progressed, the lack of any high rise cities which was what made FARCEassins Creed 3 good in the first place was lacking. Also the naval missions were fun but it seemed more work was put into that than there was making more interesting assassination missions, which ubisoft seem to have forgotten that what the game is about.
Plus it was too damn easy, I think I used the same tomahawk pretty much the whole way through.
Mass Effect 3
Ok I think you all know what's coming for this one. 99% of that game I was loving, it was so emotionally moving at times, the part where Mordin got blown to bits (oh shit SPOILER ALERT-damn too late) was just horrible for me as he was my favourite character. But yes, the ending, I'll keep this brief, but the ending was just awful, all that careful planning from the other games to make sure the characters you wanted survived, doing all those little things to get your fleet bigger and take it back to earth was for nothing. I felt very cheated as the whole charm of Mass Effect was that we all have different playthroughs and would have a climactic ending. I'm not bitter that Shepard dies (SPOILER ALER-ah I tried dammmit). But there could've been something you can do to make him/her survive because off all the stuff you have done.
Bah, to hell with that game.
The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings
Christ this game was frustrating, it was so up it's own arse, it was really trying to live up to be some dark, gritty fantasy because all the characters said 'fuck' a lot and had sex etc etc. Plus the combat system was pretty dull and the main character was about as likeable as a car crash. Plus it was just too complicated with all of it's features, I didn't bloody know how to ever make potions or meditate or whatever it was. I couldn't be arsed with it. Never finished it. Sod off Witcher 2.
finally:
Skyrim: Dragonborn
I love Skyrim, I loved Dawnguard, so I instantly got the next expansion pack the moment it came out, but the main quest was way too short and seemed rushed. The land of Solstheim was dull, brown and emotionless (not like the beautiful Forgotten Vale, the noble Dawnguard Fortress, or the Sinister looking Castle Volikhar). The northernmost regions just looked like Snowy Skyrim, so for a land that's meant to be not Skyrim, I was dissappointed because I was expecting a different feel (much like Cyrodil and the Shivering Isles) . However, great final boss battle, I still use Miraak's sexy tentacle sword (bow chika bow wow) and it's new shouts were good, however Dragon mounts, were as boring as f*ck. My god I was bored at that last bit when you go on the Dragon in Apocrypha (I play on the hardest difficulty so the enemies take more punishment so this bit went on for ages).
Too many glitches as well, a lot of redeeming features and I'm still playing it, but was hoping for a lot more.
So, there's my first post and hope you all had a good new year. Let the discussion begin
