The Turok 2 remaster is finally being released in March! But some people are saying the game's bad?

Night Dive Studios, the same company responsible for the upcoming System Shock revival, have previously updated the original Turok: The Dinosaur Hunter to steam a little over a year ago now, and recently they announced that they are finally releasing the remaster of Turok 2 on March 16.

Disclaimer: I'm quite excited. Turok 2 is easily one of my favorite childhood games. I'm quite blinded by nostalgia, but I'm aware that the game hasn't aged well at all, especially as a first person shooter well known on the N64.

However I'm a bit butthurt about those saying that the game was always bad, even when it came out, and that it was pointless to port to PC (again). It's a minority that I've seen say this, and my initial reaction was knee-jerk and biased. However I did get to thinking, this game back in the day got almost universal praise.

It's obviously fine to feel that it wasn't a good game personally, and in hindsight it's only like 6 people I've seen talk negatively, but I'd like to know if other people felt the same.

I know the answer is obvious from the perspective of today, but I'm curious to know if any of you felt the same way about Turok 2 back when it came out. I want to know if there are more people out there that felt the game wasn't good at the time, and why. It'd be interesting to me to see other arguments on a game I've loved quite dearly.

Personally (and again, take my opinion with a grain of salt) I can't see what was so negative about the game compared to other first person shooters at the time.

I do know that it may have seemed slower paced compared to the likes of Doom and Quake, and even to its own predecessor, but that shouldn't make it bad. That just makes it different.

I've always felt that Turok 2 was the best of the N64 trilogy, easily having the best visuals, meaty combat, and overall gameplay.

Yes, it was very back-tracky, but I'd argue games like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D were as well.

I played it and loved it when it was new. I never did beat it though. Can't remember what kept killing me. Turok 2 still has my favorite gun ever. The Cerebral Bore.

I will admit though that having watched the trailer, I don't think the game has held up as well as some of it's contemporaries. I hope the game makes some money for nostalgia's sake but I won't be getting it. Too many NEW games I want to play at the moment. Plus I'm a console gamer. My comp might stand a chance at running this but I've NEVER felt comfortable using mouse and keyboard for anything gaming related.

I never played 2. I thought I did, but it was actually 3 I played.

I hope they remaster 3 too.

Hello, Nightdive Studios re-released the original game a year ago on Steam. It's a ball if you like FPS action. And it's only $5 right now on Steam so it's better than pie. Turok - Dinosaur Hunter. So Turok 2 - Seeds of Evil is the one coming up on the 16th and it has multiplayer. I was trolling for information from GDC when I came across your post. Anyway ... It was one of the first - FPS - games on N64.

Thing was that when Turok 2 came out, it wasn't whole heartedly a PC game. It was a port of a N64 game but still early development of FPS gameplay and multiplayer was included. Still riding on the coat tails of the original game which was a big hit (and smokin' them dinosaur first person shooter game).

I hang out at www.Turokforums which is a fan site. Come check us out and try the $5 Steam game. It includes a level editor. I have built a level for it and that is available on Steam also, for FREE. But you have to buy the game.

Thanks for the mention of Turok, I'm enjoying playing it and looking forward to the Turok 2 release on the 16th this month. GG - GL - HF - Gazerbeam

Turok 2 was (and is still, IMO) an amazing FPS with excellent level design, gorgeous music and great weapons. The article is not wrong when it says the platforming was bad, but I've never heard praise for any platforming in an FPS (Mirror's Edge notwithstanding).

Still, this is great news. I still have my original CD but having access to it in a digitally remastered version is aces.

EDIT: Typos, all of the typos. Don't write posts when you're barely awake kids.

Still have the N64 cartridge sitting around here somewhere, but I have every intention on buying this remaster on Steam or GoG when it's available.

I was impressed with NightDive's Turok remaster, even if the game itself doesn't hold up nowadays. Turok 2 was, and still remains, one of my favorite N64 games. Might even be one of my favorite shooters. Can't wait to relive the game with modern touches. Might even nab several copies and have an old-school LAN party.

I couldn't complete that game even with the full cheat set on. The levels were ridiculous labryinths. But very cool weapons and enemies. Wasn't there some sort of mech-dinosaur you could ride with mounted rocket launcher and flak cannons? Ooh...And that mini nuke! Wouldn't mind seeing how the game runs in the present. I remember terrible fog in the original.
This is PC only, isn't it? *Sigh* Oh well.

Yes, it's PC only. As for the fog, that was due to draw distance limitations at the time. Kinda like Silent Hill, except it didn't really enhance anything. From what I've seen of the trailers, this remaster won't have it, which is nice.
