I recently had the best idea for a sandbox game. Okay maybe not the best ever but seriously, it might involve some disc swapping and it would definitely involve some contrivances but I think it'll be worth it. Okay so, imagine a Rockstar sandbox game... about time travel. Some sort of chance, paranormal thing is happening in each of Rockstar's major time periods. It can start off in the future, and as you progress you go back to modern day, in Grand Theft Auto. Re-using the cities and landscapes already rendered in another engine. Then, at will, you can go back to the 1940's and use the (extremely detailed) map and setting of Los Angeles with LA Noire. Going back even farther? With modern-day ordinance your suddenly in 1911 around Red Dead Redemption. One of the major locations in the modern day setting could be the school environment from Bully and then also Max Payne is there!
In all seriousness, from my perspective, not only would it be neat to re-visit some of these games in a new way, without having to make them direct sequels, but making these gigantic detailed sandboxes can't be easy. It could be very cost-effective in the end, and would allow the plot and mechanics to be fleshed out even more than they already are. Again, there would have to be some huge contrivances in the story to say... oh well whatever's going on its obviously taking place in a completely different part of the world in a different time period. Also it sounds like a huge game, it would probably have to fit on many discs. There could be cameos! Maybe Assassins Creed could do something similar? Start off in the future (as always) and can, on a whim, go to Venice, Rome, Jerusalem, France, you get what I'm saying. Thoughts?
