Hello ppl's,

So I'm watching discovery last night and it's some space program about all the neato shit you can find beyond our solar system. Ok, cool. They start talking about the satellite we sent out like 20 years ago called "Voyageur" 1? maybe 2? not sure. you probably have heard of it even if you do not know the name. We put greeting messages in it in over 50 languages, we put our physiology, and something else...

That something else is what I have a problem with. We put the instructions on how to find earth in there. So now, whenever anyone finds the stupid thing, hopefully they are friendly or we are frickin toast.

Think. In EVERY sci-film, video game, whatever, the location of the homeworld is always the most closely guarded secret, and we have just sent the flipping thing out there for anyone to pick up.

I think it's the most colossally stupid thing we, as a race, have ever done.

Thoughts?

Thing is, it's going to take hundreds of years for that thing just to get outside our Solar System. By the time the Voyager probes reach the outskirts of the Sol system, we will have developed further technologically speaking and we'll be even more capable of defending ourselves. If alien life does exist, there's not even any gurantee that they'll pick it up, or if they do, they may not be as technologically advanced as us. They may not have achieved space travel yet, whereas we have. A common misconception among theories about alien life, fuelled a lot by popular fiction, is that any aliens will be intelligent, as technologically advanced as us (or more so), bipedal and/or humanoid, and so on. None of these are likely (if alien life does exist experts agree that it is most likely to be some sort of insect style creature). Therefore the idea isn't really as stupid as one may think.

As for the stupidest thing mankind has ever done, I would have to go with US and UK politicians over the past ten years. Simple as that.

nuclear power is a good thing. It probly fuels your house right now, and its a clean energy source. Weaponising it is bad.

To racially exterminate others. That applies to many, many politcal groups in history which says something quite sad about our species.

If there is an alien species out there that could travel through space fast enough to reach us anytime soon, once they found this satellite, then they could most likely find us anyway.

Here's an interesting factoid. If someone were to look through a telescope 200 light years away from Earth, they would be seeing our planet as it was 200 years ago. They wouldn't be seeing us chatting on cell phones, or watching movies or listening to Nickelback. (Thank god for that!)

So it's really not as simple as just "Finding the satellite, then blasting off through space to enslave our planet."

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

So many choices for this topic, but I suppose communism and what it has done embodies the worst things that have happened to humans and the fact it keeps on appealing to people despite its disastrous history.

What about religion? The deaths that have been caused by religion pale in comparison to communism. (I won't even get on the part that communism has been around for a tiny fraction of that of religion as well).

I can cite exact numbers if you wish of the deaths caused by Communist countries vs the biggest atrocities of religion. Let me know if you want to try this argument with me, you will lose, the numbers are there.

it left our solar system in the 80's... or perhaps earlier.

...

george bush's second election
I would add George Bush's first election to that list as well, you guys would have been much better off with Al Gore. As for the probes leaving in the 80's, that doesn't change the fact that it'll take hundreds of years just to get out of Sol system. 20-30 years isn't hundreds of years now, is it?

Americas armed forces
i understand wat they are doing in the middle east, but all we see in england is "american tank shoots english journalists" and "america bombs church while wedding is going on because of maybe a terrorist"

Plus religion. Not soo much for the deaths it has caused but more for the way it makes people act. I hate all religions equally as they are all fucking retarded.
religion boils down to basic human insticts - dont hurt people in any way
if its retarded to be human, feel free

p.s. i hope this isnt going to turn into another religion thread

I'd have to go with the Atom bomb or religion, religion in itself is perfectly ok but it's far too often the cause of war and pointless hate.
