Why does it seem like alot of games seem to think that annoying is the same thing as cute or funny? It baffels me. JRPG's seem the most guilty of this. As an example I'm playing Blue Dragon right now. The character Marumaro is seriously the most annoying little creature I've ever seen. Seriously check out a youtube video of him. I wish something in the plot would just kill him off so I don't have to deal with him anymore. I get this weird vibe that he was supposed to be endearing or something. I just don't understand why so many games have at least one of those characters that is just horrible. Could anyone maybe enlighten me with the reasoning behind this or maybe just vent their own annying character frustrations? I am so confused.

Well of course, I know nothing about the game, so I can't give you a personal opinion on the matter. However, my perception of matters such as these is that what people like will always differ, and so while you and others may find certain characters annoying, others may not. I can't make a judgement for myself, because even if I looked it up on Youtube, I'm completely out of the loop here.

I will keep my answer to one sentence and it will instantly make things clear for you. If it doesn't, that's not my problem. Okay, here goes.

It's a Japanese thing.

There you are.

I'm just talking about in any game where you've encountered a character that seems like it would be considered universally annoying by anyone who encountered it. Every time their mouth opens you just go "Uugh" and have a taste like vomit in the back of your throat. You know, that sort of thing.

Most cute looking girls in Jrpg's have squeeky, high pitched voices, apparantly that's considerd cute.

Ah, you mean...The Scrappy.

Okay, sure. I have an instance that fits. For some reason, somebody thought putting a pink fuzzy animal in Xenogears and making it one your characters...and then making it capable of increasing its size to that of the other mechs...was somehow a good idea. Guess who I never use.

I have the exact same thing with Hope from Final Fantasy 13, then i found out there are people that actually like him.
Whoa are you serious? People actually like him? That is whacked! He's a petulant little snot nosed punk who's motivation makes no sense. And as a bonus he's useless in combat. That is the kind of character I'm talking about only I didn't find him infuriating, just stupid. Picture Vanille and now put her voice up four octaves and 3000 decibles.

Don't get me wrong. I love JRPG's. They are one of my favorite genres. There's just sometimes one character that no one, but NO ONE, could possibly find appealing.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are really good with this. Luckily it didn't take any of this Fable BS and allowed you to shoot everyone in the face.

Cortana from Halo also had a really annoying habit of getting nicked and then being snarky about it. I really wish Halo 3 had gone a bit RPG just for the decision "Do you want to go save Cortana from the hivemind and invariably run out of ammo and die, or do you want to go for beers with the arbiter and leave the smug cow to sarcasm her way out of it?"

YES! (To this.) I do not see the appeal of what is basically a computer program. At least the Geth have that whole struggling with what it means to be sentient. Cortana was designed by some really lonely guy in the IT department.

You're playing games designed for an entirely different culture you are almost certainly not a part of.

There's supposed to be stuff you don't understand wtf they are talking about or doing something for. That's the entire point.

they are for comic relief? Maybe you are meant to be amused and then the game is not so serious?

I would also like to field this question, more specifically about Ed from Cowboy Bebop.

I can't fucking stand her, she's the most annoying character ever.

And the reason they make her like that is because many people do like her. God knows how. But yeah. People are crazy, and many like really, really annoying characters. Such is life!
