ok so there isnt a real giant sphere outside my city as much as it would make perth worth a damn
but here is the thing

im designin a sort of scenario
and this includes a giant industrial city, before i explain the metal ball, here is a verbal description of the city

like coruscant from Star wars only all the buildings are factories or other industrial processors

the skyline is riddled with chiminies and odd shaped towers, on background of a permanent orange coloured sky

the factory towers and the chiminies reach so high up that hardly any snlight reaches the lower levels

as for where the people live they all live in rundown compacted apartments inbetween the small gaps that are made from the factory towers, all of them connected by a web of mettalic bridges and staircases

the people are unhappy, they are upset with the unhygenic, oppressive, desperate living conditions and want to leave.

thats where the sphere comes in...

the sphere is a basically a giant iron ball (like the omnidroid from the incredibles)

surrounding the city is a expansive desert, and from the Nothern side of the city the sphere lies half buried in the dirt, only accessible by a bridge that goes around it, however not iside of it....

so far i have in stor the sphere can grow legs and walk, but right now i need an additional reason on why the sphere does not allow the people to leave

help me escapist's your my only hope

Fires tactical nukes on anyone who tries to leave?
Dulls the inhabitants' ability to make decisions, effectively preventing them from trying to leave?

It's projecting a massive forcefield around the city.

OT: It's a robot controlled by a villain. The villain is out for money of course. Why they need money is up to you.

its obvious, the wasteland is dangerous and its PROTECTING us.
and the sphere can convert the pollution into its energy through heat to power itself.
only one person realises the pollution levels are dropping and there are massive amounts of radiation in the desert, but then the people revolt before he can provide proof, and manage to weaken it. inadvertently, they release all the byproducts of the sphere powering itself and destroy a chunk of the city.

write that as a book, then english teachers will take it as an allegory for man's destructive nature and unwillingness to accept help from foreigners due to their xenophobia, and the class wont mind reading it because its got a fucking robot sphere.

also, make it about 20% more steampunk.

The sphere is controlled by a computer/A.I. that either serves the corporations interrests (i.e. people shall stay in the sphere and WORK their asses off), almost like "mother" in the original Alien movie.
Or the computer/A.I. has gone insane due to [insert mad reason here].

It may be a bit cliché, but that's all I'm coming up with.

THAT'S a good suggestion! :D

I love how the sphere's reasons aren't obvious in your suggestion, and therefor, you win a free internet!

This reminds me of FLCL, the anime serie. With that big iron spewing steam just outside the city.

What if the sphere doesn't prevent people from leaving but some evil company, it's always a evil company, terrifies people with story's of what will happen when they do. Just using the sphere as a tool.

Captcha has a name for your iron ball.

This [http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/default.asp?cid=21-04-08] crossed with this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op7IgFbT8l0&feature=related]. Just replace the ocean with the desert.

I say never open the sphere, don't have it walking, talking or anything coming out of it, leave it a complete mystery, only do peoples speculation on what it might be.

Some say it wasn't always there, some say the city was built after it came, some say it came from the sky, all we know is it's called the Sphere.

It's official. The people who put the ball there are building an evil pinball machine around to see how fast they can destroy your city. I suggest reinforcing the walls of your home.
