About a week ago I was staying over a friend of mine's house. It was about 2 in the morning and we were just fucking around with an old radio. We then got a weird, sort of The Ring-esque signal consisting of some static and a bit of what sounded like someone speaking in a foreign language, followed by beeping and more static. It also looped every 5 minutes or so. After about 15 minutes or so we just got a bit too creeped out and turned it off.

I just now found out that these mysterious signals are called "numbers signals" and were used in WW2 and the Cold War for use in espionage. Apparently an obscure government radio station could send an encrypted message in a mix of what seems like Morse, random music, and other obscure sounds.

Apparently many of these channels are still broadcasting.

Here is an especially creepy numbers station recording I found on YouTube.
Try listening to this with the lights out at midnight...

Reminds me of when I played through Fallout 3 the first time in the middle of the night, and I was switching through the radio signals and suddenly bumped into a morse code radio, sadly there were nothing more about them but kinda creeped me ;)

Title is misleading, I thought you were gonna talk about rap/R&B. Sad face.
I found this, if anyone knows how I can hear one on my radio, please tell.

Numbers stations are freaky as shit. I've got a Fallout 3 creepypasta that involves them here if you want to see the kind of things it is rumoured they broadcast: http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/3845/strangefalloutinfoforwa.jpg

I was once in a vehicle driving towards Fort McMurray, Alberta, and we started picking up a Colorado Christian radio station, during some schmucks' extreme right-wing call-in show.

I think I almost pissed myself, listening to this schlub rant and froth about 'THE BROWN INVASION FROM THE SOUTH', by which he apparently meant Mexicans crossing the border into the USA in droves.

[sub]Personally, I'd always imagined they'd come in cars, trucks and vans.[/sub]

The really funny part is that I was approximately 1100 miles north of Denver, so there's no way I can imagine the radio receiving a signal from an FM station situated there, especially since I know for a fact that no local stations were re-broadcasting it, and the vehicle I was in didn't have satellite radio.

Nope sorry... I tend to avoid those topics because it only leads to flame wars and shit of the like.

The idea of those signals gives me the creeps for some reason, even during the day.

The creepiest thing that I heard on the radio was on this one station around here that just got replaced by a country station. It was a predominantly metal station, with a lot of punk and hard rock on it as well. One night I fell asleep with the radio on, and this song started playing, waking me up at around the 40 second mark:

At the time, I had no idea what it was. Now that I do, it's only marginally less creepy. I never fell asleep with that station going again. x.x

I can't manage it with the lights on and other people around... It's pretty damn creepy.

Never heard of these before. Interesting... And not the rant about pop music I had feared!

Yeah these things are pretty weird, yet kind of mesmerizing. (Hence the Ring reference in OP.)

That reminds me of Ocarina of Time and Jet Force Gemini for some reason.

OT: I didn't want to turn the lights out.
It wasn't creepy with them on, but I was going to need to sleep and didn't want to be unnerved.

There was something about it that made me fixate on it though.
I kept playing it back on a loop, over and over again for some reason.

Fun stuff.

Just think of it this way: It's a HELL of a lot more unique than most of the music that's the radio right now...

But seriously, that stuff is creepy...I might listen to more of it to get myself in the mood for Halloween tonight.
