Yeap, you heard that right; we'll be getting a new Age of Empires, but it's quite a bit different from the AoE we know and love. Here's the trailer:
I'm not sure what to think about it. A persistent RTS world sounds really awesome, but I'm not too fond of the new graphical style.

So what's your take on it, fellow Escapees? Is there another RTS game you'd rather see in an MMO setting? Dawn of War the MMORTS? Oh hell yes.

Aww gross, Games for Windows Live.

I'd like to see a Rise of Nations, or Rise of Legends for that matter. I played the shit out of those games while growing up.

I think it looks really interesting.
Then I saw GFWL.

AoE3 is what got me into RTS games so I'll be having a look at this, hopefully get into the beta. If there are monthly fees though when it's released I'm not going to bother, I don't play RTS games enough to warrant it.

Meh, no thanks. I'll stick with the old AoE games.

Oh sweet new GFWL games! :D

I only have 3.

As long as there is no subscription fee other than Gold then I will so get this!

Just signed up to the Microsoft Connect Beta program ^_^ Hopefully I'll get in.

I normally seem to get into Betas.

Hey, this looks like a lot of fun! I've been wondering what a persistent RTS game would be like... When you're offline does it just continue farming and lockdown your fortress? Hmmm...

RTS isn't really my thing - I did go through a phase of playing AoE a lot when I was younger though.

Yeah, the art style to me doesn't look right for the kind of game AoE1 was. Don't really know much about the other two.
I agree on the art style looking too cartoony - AoE was always supposed to be semihistorical, and it looks more fantasy than realism for the MMO, which is kinda odd.

That's... really, really disappointing. That's all I can really say about it.

Well that and Fuck you Microsoft.

Being active 24/7 seems dumb - you play for a day and half build an empire and while you're offline someone who has clocked like 3 weeks playtime wipes you out. Rinse, repeat

I'd rather they tried taking steps forward visually (like total war series) and found a good era for a new proper AoE game

The cartoony art style doesn't look so bad, even interesting.

It lo-- OH MY GOD GAMES FOR WINDOWS LIVE?!

Havn't seen enough of the actual gameplay to judge it.

So now it's just like those browser based games where you lose because you didn't start playing when it came out?

Awesome.
You don't really know that yet.

looks ok i guess. still won't buy it unless everyone starts praising it. the new art style doesn't bother me but i don't know how an mmorts would work? does your base go into sn impenetrable state when you're offline or can it be attacked while you are gone?

I think I'll stick with the far superior Age of Mythology.

Seriously...it's Age of Empires with freakin' dragons and sphinxes and giant squids!

AoE2 is the best AoE game so far, and I expect it will be better than this one as well.
