Okay, as a huge thief fan I would love a sequel but despite deadly shadows being an 'okay' addition to the series, eidos didn't exactly wow me with its crappy graphics and wobbly gameplay. Now this financially troubled company 'announces' thief 4 is in production, or rather, it announced that like what, a year and a half ago, and there is absolutely no progress.

Its more like: "Hey! All thief fans we might make a game so come hang out with eidos for a few years even though we aren't making it until deus ex 3 is out, which we intend to ruin as well since it was too 'complicated' before.

LoL, I was on the thief 4 forums and my account was banned because I repeatedly asked questions like : "Are you guys actually making this game? Where are the screenshots a year later? Do you have concept art? Like one picture at least?"

Thoughts? Personally I believe Eidos is a pathetic game company for announcing a project without intending to create anything for maybe 2 years, just because they know fans of the series will be interested.

And don't get me started on the stupid ideas they have on those forums. The moderator, victoria "The wannab" told me they intend to bring the real Viktoria back from thief 1 and 2.... Except that would completely ruin the storyline of the series. Eidos = fail and I will not buy this game. Download 2 test it 1st... If its even ever made.

Developers seem to insist on diluting the aspects of their games that gave them unique charm and people seem to insist that any change at all is bad...
However, I haven't really seen any example of the first, just lots of the second.
And that's not to say change is inherently good, some change is just fucking terrible, like with Splinter Cell Conviction's action-focused "stealth" gameplay, for instance.

But I've no idea what they're doing with Thief 4, all I know is that it's descended from a series that invented the idea of "real stealth" in games, zombies, health bars and magic not withstanding, so it's got some big shoes to fill and if the developers are smart, they'll use the first two game's mechanics and settings as the base for the new game and build up from there.

If not, we'll probably get something very standard and safe with lots of killing, regenerating health and forgiving A.I.

In other words, Splinter Cell Conviction or Assassins Creed 2 >____<
I'm afraid of that. 1 and 2 were the best games ever made, next to system shock 2 because the worlds were so big and felt so 'realistic' despite having bad graphics in my opinion.

And you're gonna luv this... Garrett might not even return. They are thinking on either replacing his character or replacing his traditional voice actor.

That happens my purchase receipt will = free.99 4 all time. I won't buy that game.

They announced it, they are working on it. Games don't get made overnight, they will be done when they are done - games typically take a good while to develop so quit your whining.

personally, though I've never played a thief game, i think a step into the modern age would be nice for thief. imagine it, a gang watching TV in their nicely lit room, then you cut the power. the members run out, guns cocked, while the leader waits for the sound of gunfire to show his victory. then, you appear, behind him and take him out with a silence pistol. you disappear, and they return to see their leader dead.

awesome.
Couldn't you then just play Hitman/Splinter Cell, I would prefer having Thief different rather than like the other major stealth franchises.

hitman and splinter cell have you going up against organized crime, imagine a kid who's town is over run with this filth, so he takes it into his own hands to take them out...one at a time. like a GTA IV style city, but at night and a single bullet kills you. and you only have a pistol.

Couldn't you then just play Hitman/Splinter Cell, I would prefer having Thief different rather than like the other major stealth franchises.
Did you just put your reply in my reply? xD I'm so confused.

AM I a bad person gamer for not liking Thief?

I mean, I really, badly wanted to. I bought the first two but they just felt so terribly outdated :-/ I could never tell where I were or where I was supposed to go.

I bought the third one the Steam sale since it was supposedly different (and from an ere of PC gaming where the graphics are not as much in the way), but it just didn't click. It didn't feel like the engine was suited for stealth gameplay. I guess I'm spoiled with modern stealth games...

Or do I just need to warm up to the games?

You have no idea what their progress is. Who knows, perhaps it'll be released in a month. That's up to them.

The announcement was a boon for the developers, as working on some project in secret is a serious pain - now they can freely mention wherever they go that yeah, they're working on 'thiaf'.

Often these projects take years, and having to be quiet about what you do - to everyone, including your relatives - is really not fun.

I call BS. Yep that's what Eidos execs would say. It isn't true though. They fired a lot of their staff because of the recession and all of them are working on deus ex 3, not thief 4. Thief 4 is free advertisement for them, that's all.

Surprised you couldn't see this if, as your avatar says, you were gaming before we were born...

I think another inaccuracy in the hitman/splinter cell comparison is that in those games the point is to kill people. Thief was exactly the opposite where you're trying to steal everything worth something without alerting or hurting anybody. Except the very few bosses that you couldn't avoid.

That game would be called Assassin not Thief. If the game was Thief then the gangsters would return to their room and find all their "ca$h money bling-bling" gone as well as the leaders shiny gold tooth.

Actually a true cat burglar simulating game set in a modern city would be kind of fun. Break into random houses, steal for cash, don't get caught... I'd play that.

At the time Theif 3 was okay. But there were other games that already set the bar in that type of stealth, mostly Splinter Cell. It really actually felt more like a poor inpersonation of Splinter Cell to me, and not nearly as fun either. Of course if you booted it up now and played it for the first time it would no doubt seem like total rubbish.

I always thought the Hitman style of Stealth was really cool, using disguises and such. I think in the next installment if they added a dialogue screen to help further your success of infiltration it would be a neat thing.

I'd give Eidos a break, they had barely started work on the game when they announced it (which was kind of stupid on their part), but good games take a while. And it's being made by Eidos Montreal, the same guys making Deus Ex 3, and based on what we've seen from that game so far, Thief 4 is in capable hands.

That is a NINJA game, sir (minus you using a gun). And while it would be amazing, it just wouldn't be Thief! ^_^
