I think it goes without saying that I, being on The Escapist, love games. However, the game industry has no shortage of ways to make me dissapointed, even mad. So here are a few things that I think need to change in games in order to help legitimize and strengthen the medium.

1: Stop 3D before it's too late.
Don't get me wrong, 3D is a nice concept, a nice little novelty. But as with films, 3D doesn't really add much to the experience of playing, it just makes the visuals look blurry and unfocused, and really isn't as immersive as developers would have you believe. Not that I am objected to 3D games entirely, I just don't want to see it become a trend like with films nowadays, where a parade of mediocre titles gain great success because they're in 3D. We've made games look amazing already, let's not cheapen it with an overrated novelty.

2: Move away from motion controls.
Yeah, the Wii was neat for a while, and yeah it sold a lot, who cares? But can you honestly name a game that involves motion controls that would be less fun without them? Most of the best games on the Wii use very little of the console's wiggle and waggle hoopla, so why not just go with what works? All the greatest games that have come out of the industry have been controller based (FACT), but gimmicky ones like the Wii and Kinect and that Playstation... thing... have sold like crazy. So yeah, keep motion controls, but focus more on the games without them, because those are the games with more potential to be great.

3: Stop making COD clones.
Honestly. It's getting pretty ridiculous.

4. Stop making COD clones that are not mature or tactful in any way.
I'd be okay with modern war games if they were able to teach me something about war or human nature, or speak to some sort of emotion in a way that only a game could. That would be great, and if that game existed, I would hold it up high and laud it to everybody I know. Too bad it doesn't.

5: Stop making foreign countries into your patriot scapegoats.
I'm looking at you, America. Games like Homefront are honestly the most sickening and horrible examples of what I hate about war games: the use of actual contries as the villains. COD did it with Russia, Homefront with North Korea, and so on. I get using the Middle East as a setting, because that's a little more topical considering America has real conflicts going on there, but Russia and North Korea? Come on. America hasn't been at war with either (the Cold War doesn't count), and in Russia's case is even on good terms with them. Why make people of other nations out to be barbaric and inhumane when things like that have not even happened?

6: Bury Duke Nukem Forever
Let's just forget that ever happened and move on, yes?

And 7: Write better stories.
Would it not be awesome to have a game that is written by an acclaimed writer? Have a game based more around story than gameplay, but still have great gameplay too? I think the problem with a lot of stories in games is that they're written by gamers, and therefore don't translate as well as fiction. Many games do excell in that area, like Bioshock and Mass Effect, but the industry as a whole needs work. I don't think there has been a Godfather or Casablanca of games yet, and I'd like to see it happen. The only way that can occur is through better storytelling. But I hope that is soon to come.

I honestly think that if you banned cloning the industry would fuck itself so hard its testicles would become a perminent fixture of the anus.

And one for the list: what the hell happened to map editors? little big planet is glorified for being a massive one but remember when every second game had lists of user-made content?

Russia as a villian is a Cold War thing. North Korea is a current enemy, and a terrible country.
You dont think other countries would use real countries too? And how many games is the American Government the bad guy? So its not like its one sided.

3D is pretty fun, I'm playing Raving Rabbids in Time on my husband's 3DS, but I can only stomach about 30 minutes of it every few days because I just can't focus on it well enough. Granted I could just turn off the 3D, but it's too cute! And isn't there some really crappy 3D games that came out kind of rushed?

Motion controls, for me, make me tired. I can't do much before I'm winded and out of breath. Maybe it's just me, but hey, I can play games longer sitting on my butt with a controler in hand.

make less realistic big budget games.
The core audience of gaming (the ones who have been gaming the longest) enjoy lush, stylized visuals rather than the hyper-realistic sort of depressing kind.
also Stop releasing DLC the same week the game comes out. Keep DLC ideas in studio so you will have good things to add to the sequel rather than causing it to be a cash-grab.

Swearing in videogames. It annoys me that writers think that an M game needs to have a ton of F-Bombs in order to be seen as "mature" Seriously is there any real need for it? Let's look at Resident Evil 5 as an example, it has an F-Bomb totally out of nowhere and wasn't needed at all.

EDIT: Oh and I totally just remembered something else that bugs me. Adding titles to sequels instead of numbers. This probably only bugs me, but I find it so annoying that Assassin's Creed went from 2, Brotherhood, Revelations. I mean what happened to the numbers Ubisoft?

In games with unlockable content, all of the cool, different weapons need to be unlocked, or most of them unlocked at the start, and only have the upgrades be buyable/random drop/level up rewards. This is part of what made me stop playing Team Fortress 2; I just could not keep up with all of the new weapons, and they were all cool and interesting but completely inaccessible.

Sweeet jumping jesus on a pogo stick, this! It pulled me out of the experience so, so many times in Fallout: New Vegas and Oblivion (both of which are the 4th games in beloved franchises - disregarding spin-off bullshit - now on current-gen consoles developed by Beteshda in a speculative fiction setting and feature the fighting style 'run-backwards-and-spam-projectiles' for anyone who's not a close combat fighter because the enemies can survive repeated headshots. The environments are also rather samey, except for when in different settlements with an obvious huger one where major plot points take place and you can have multiple-choice conversations with constantly staring npcs who have a rather small range of voice actors, faces and other cosmetic details.)

TL;DR: Fuck invisible walls and beteshda keep doing the same thing over.

Reading this I looked back at Mass Effect a series full of violence, some graphic gore, overall a lot of mature themes, and to my memory no one ever swears.

stop removing split screen from games.

i have many friends, i'm getting married in the next year, and we don't have xbox live or PS3s so our only option is split screen or some other form of couch co-op.

this only pisses me off when the good guys are the americans. as an american i know our politicians tend to stick their noses in everything and ruin everyone's fun (to put it lightly)

i don't mind using real countries in a realistic setting because it makes the conflict more realistic and interesting. it's really boring to fight the faceless PMC over and over again. it's also really boring to fight Russia over and over again. it would be interesting to play games from perspectives of real countries no one ever writes from the perspective of. have a game centered as a leader of the resistance movement in Darfur or something like that. something creative. something different.

Enjoying it up there on your high horse are you? You really think it's a good idea for developers/ publishers to not release DLC anymore? That's a good one, why not just ask them to give out games for free, and then burn their money.

I agree with your less realism sentiment though, it's never going to be hyper realistic to the point where you cannot tell what's real any more, so why try?

My rant would be no invisible walls, immersion is key to a great game.

And maybe consistent voice acting too, sick and tired of 'hysterical' NPC's suddenly sounding fine, mid conversation.

Really? Cool. I haven't played the Mass Effect games admittedly, one of my many gaming sins. (P.S. I didn't say every game does this)
