So my home in Minecraft XBLA is built on top of a massive mine system that is where most of my resourses come from. Lately though I haven't been going down there because it scares me, not out of what's down there (I play on peaceful), but because of its layout. It's so big that it's very easy to get lost, I'm certain that it has taken me 30 minutes to a hour just to get out of the mine before. I have been trying to get help with cutting out the level of complexity of the system without success so I've taken to looking for other places nearby to mine. So my question to the Escapist is, what sort of things terrify you in games?

Captcha: my bad. Captcha, I swear to God if you're the reason I keep getting lost in my mine I'll find you and smash you.

Probably the scariest thing ever. Ever. You thought that going through the door would save you, but ohhhoho no!

Run...[small]they will catch you.[/small]

Water enemies.

I flat out refuse to play Serious sam again because of the sewer level, with these fucking things waiting in the murky waters. You can only see them once they are in biting range.......

Empty, un-warded paths in MOBAs.
I don't even get (successfully) ganked that often and they still freak me out.
Especially when the entire other team is missing and mine is elsewhere.

God why does that thing look so familiar? Where is that from?

That's Phanto from Super Mario Bros. 2, the deadly flying guardian of the key. Funny thing is, I didn't even know until very recently that you can drop the key to make him go away for a while. I always just ran as fast as my legs could take me.

OT: Big monsters that eat you if they get too close. Because it's usually a one hit kill and I have a fear of being eaten alive.

It's the enemy from Super Mario Bros. 2 that chases you whenever you pick up one of the keys.

After a bit of Googling I have discovered that they are called Phantos, Terror of Your Childhood. (Added that second bit myself.)

Why don't you just leave a trail of torches?

I don't like water enemies in games they scare the pants off me. Especially if you get a looming shadow of blackness before you see them fully brrrr.

Sharks in Tomb Raider 2 used to freak me out a lot.

Any ship battle in a Nebula storm in FTL, plus any time some enemies teleport into my ship in clearly empty space.

This! SO much fucking this!

Water enemies always freak me the fuck out, I remember playing, I think it was Jak and Daxter as a kid, and I tried to swim outside of the bounds of the map. Suddenly, a giant fucking fish came out of the water and ate me and I've never been able to swim in murky water in video games again. Playing Black Mesa was awful because I forgot about the whole Ichthyosaur level. Needless to say, pants were shat.

The Boys of Silence from Bioshock Infinite

Comstock's House is creepy place, no thanks to these guys, but they didn't really scare me, until after a cutscene, when one of them comes from behind you out of nowhere, scaring the shit out of me

The sound effects from Silent Hill 2 and 3. The static on the radio for the most part. My friend called, so I paused the game. The music, the monster noises, and the radio did not stop, even on the pause screen. It got under my skin to the point where I had to mute the game while I talked to him because the panic was slowly building.

And then all the sound effects in Silent Hill 2. When you finally get outside at night, with all the nurses now wandering the streets with their guns, the radio, music, and sound effects hit level 11 and just don't stop. I couldn't take the panic and stopped playing the game. Haven't touched it since, even when I picked up the SH Collection.

Them ending. I become rather depressed when a game that I really enjoyed comes to an end. I become anxious and fidgety the closer to the end I get. I've been known to develop minor palpitations due to it. This stems from my fear of being alone, because ending a game that you really get in to feels a bit like losing a friend. I have the same problem with books.

On a less philosophical note: Redeads from OoT. Those fuckers scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.

Water enemies, sometimes just any large body of water. I'm guessing it's caused by all the instant death water from games I played as a kid, and the habit has just stayed with me.

Music boxes, don't know why about this one, I guess I just had a crappy childhood. If a music box comes on at any time in a game, that's when I stop conserving ammo and pull out the shotgun.

My first experience with surround sound was with Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear. In a LAN match I was sniping from a belltower and I heard the crack of a rifle in front of me and swear by all that might be holy I FELT as well as heard the bullet whiz past my left ear. Holy fuck that bullet scared me.
Also Headcrabs in HL1 and the fucking monster-fish that came out of nowhere to devour me.
