Be it music, movies, shows, games, etc.

For example. I never grew up watching the Muppets in my childhood, I mean I was aware of them in one form, the Muppet Babies cartoon, but never watched the actual puppet shows proper growing up.

In my teens I never heard of the "Popular" music bands such as Simple Plan or Good Charlotte that dominated MTV.

What famous stuff that is popular you never grew up with?

My family didn't have money for videogames or consoles until after the playstation was released, so while I was aware of nintendo stuff and had played it a bit at friends places, I didn't have the nintendo childhood that seems to have informed so many of the people and games related writing I see. Nobody talks about the one flight simulator I played growing up on widows 3.

My first PC related games were a 3-D Pinball game by Sierra, and a kid's educational game called Are You Ready 4 School:

But my first true "Proper" PC game was Starcraft 1.

I never grew up owning a "electric drivable toy cars:

And its one of the things I am still sad I never owned in my childhood, although I did once owned a 4-track and a scooter/roller skates so nothing a value was completely lost.

My family didn't have cable while I was growing up, so I didn't watch any classic Nickolodeon or Cartoon Network.

Certain folks online think this makes me subhuman.

Christmas and birthdays. My folks are JDubs.

Violent media. Stuff like the Ninja Turtles and G.I. Joe and Mortal Kombat because my parents didn't let me consume it, though I bought violent video games behind their backs when I was old enough to make my own spending money.

The Simpsons, oddly enough. I remember watching one of the first season episodes when I was five, not really getting it but soon after it too was verboten because of the swearing. Of course, my brother and I snuck down to the basement and watched it on Grandma's old TV and when I was like sixteen, my dad saw the Stonecutters episode, thought it was funny and then we could watch it together as a family. They softened up on a lot of stuff when I got older, thankfully but never on any media with sex or excessive swearing in it.

Oh yes indeed, I was fully aware of the Simpson but never managed watching a single episode in my youth. I ended up watching more South Park and Family Guy then the Simpsons as a grew older.

Like I think by the time Family Guy came out, Simpsons was already in the decline.

Voltron.

I have watched many cartoons in the late 80's but I can never recalled watching Voltron. My brother keep insisting that I did watched some of it when I was little but I have zero trace of it in my memory. The same somewhat apply with He-Man but at least I can remember watching the sequel "The New Adventure of He-Man".

That is the reason why I never give Legendary Defenders a go while I did watched the last He-Man reboot. I have no real connection with Voltron.

Yes I awared Legendary Defenders is a different continunity to the old show but I tend to watched reboot shows more if I had watched the original like TMNT, Ghostbuster, He-Man and Transformers. Ok granted this doesn't always apply like I never watched the old MLP but the current show was worth watching for other reasons.

Oh before you say that the people whose did Avatar/ Korra are the ones working on Legendary Defenders, eyeah I'm no longer hardcore fan of that show.

For me to stayed away from that show kinda paid off due to some of the toxicity that fandom has become.

Sports.

My dad worked insane hours. My brother had no time for me, being five years younger.

So, I wasn't really exposed to it. I still don't care about them to this day. One of the reasons I like video games is that anyone can play. If there are ANY, I'm sure the number of 5'7 basketball players other Spud Webb is minuscule at best. Tuning in to people who were just genetically built to do this one thing doesn't interest me.

And if you think I'm being hyperbolic, check out Michael Phelps' stats [https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/swimming/10768083/Michael-Phelps-The-man-who-was-built-to-be-a-swimmer.html]. Nothing about how he's built is normal. But since we focus on swimming, he's a millionaire. I know people who can make frisbees basically stand up and dance, but since frisbees aren't in the olympics, they have to stick to their shift in Best Buy. It makes no sense to me.

I was very into sports as a kid in my case. I played Baseball, Basketball, Running Races, etc.

I also enjoyed sport themed movies and episodes to shows that were for kids like Hey Arnold.

Sandlot still holds a place in my heart:

Sandlot still holds a place in my heart:

First off, the Sandlot is Legend and I'll fight anyone who disagrees. I high fived a guy who had "You're KILLING ME, Smalls!" t-shirt in Ikea.

Secondly, a lot of sports rules never made sense to me. Why am I allowed to tackle a guy in football, but not kick him in the chest, sweep his legs, or throw on a wrist lock?

... I was into Martial Arts as a kid. But not regular sports.

And speaking about weird things for Sports... Why aren't games like Soccer, Volleyball, and Baseball officially Co-ed? I'd legitimately be more interested in some sports if they were co-ed because you're drawing the best of the entire world, not just a segment.

Mr. Roger?s Neighbourhood. The show either wasn?t broadcast in Australia, or I personally managed to never see it if it was.

Don't know if it counts, but stuff like Pokemon. It came out after my time "growing up". A lot of the people I know rave about it, and I tried watching a few episodes to see if I could at least enjoy it enough to be able to properly join in the discussions about it, but I couldn't stand it.

Same with the explosion of anime. Sure, I watched quite a bit of it back in the 90s, but after I left uni I stopped and only recently tried it again. Holy gods I hate it. I recall watching stuff that was basically an animated take on adult shows/stories with a creativity that only the Japanese have, not constant upskirts, ridiculously oversized jelly-boobs and children that're "actually 1200 years old, so it's ok if they're trying to fuck the adult main character".

That said, these days I may be too

to understand or enjoy it.

Same... I'm from the era of PS1 emergent gamers and I never got the opportunity to even play PC games (WORK ONLY!) until a neighbour showed me Caesar 3, except a set of three games (Space Invaders, Top Gun and something else I can't remember) we played on our TV hooked up to a crappy computer run from a floppy disk... not a 3.5' disk, a proper 5 1/4in floppy disk that earned the name 'floppy', LOL.

We weren't poor by any means, just had other priorities and my old man basically said: you want it, you pay for it. As a PC gamer, I only truly started at 18 when I went to university, and as a console (with my own, that is) gamer at... um... 28-9 or something dumb like that, a second hand PS2 being my first. Like... eeeesh!

Because the mixed teams wouldn't start to appear in any sport before 3rd division or lower. Takes the shine off from female World Champions to get stuck with some semi-pro guys while 17-year-old comets surpass them time and time again. And maybe we would see the rare case who really, truly aimed for the top... only to be found doping or getting a career-ending injury in record time.

Some sports can, and by all means should be co-ed ( like shooting or archery). Equestrian actually is. Professional gaming is too (inb4 not sports).

OT: Grandparents that weren't divorced. Cocoa-flavored cereal. I also didn't get a cell phone before I was 13! Everyone but me and that one kid from an actually poor family had one in 6th grade already.

Mario and other Nintendo games. I imagine only a small portion of kids had videogames back in the early 90's in Brazil, so because of that, I didn't really grow up with videogames, I played in the streets instead. Eventually my parents would give me and my brother a Master System II, but my cousins had a Super Nintendo. Still, I never really cared for Mario. Whenever I went to my cousins, I'd play Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, F-Zero, Stunt Race FX, etc.

I'd eventually get a PC in 1995 when I was 10, I think, and that was when I became a part of the PC Master Race. I'd only get another console 20 years later, a hand me down PS3, so I prtty much skipped every console game during that period.

Anime is another thing that by the time it got popular, I was too old to enjoy it. I'm not an expert, but I don't think anime was a big deal here until the mid 2000's. Prior to that, in the 90's, TV networks here would import live action shows like Jiraya, Changeman, Lion Man, Jiban, Jaspion, Black Kamen Rider, Cybercops, etc. I grew up watching Saint Seiya, which was huge here in the mid 90's (the damn thing is still popular enough to this day, with voice actors being invited to cons and stuff), and maybe the one responsible for opening the doors for more anime. Some time later Dragon Ball was on TV but by that time I was too old to enjoy that type of shit.

On the other hand, I grew up watching all kinds of movies because my forever alone aunt was kind of a movie buff back then.
