This may be a topic that is close to the hearts of some escapists but while looking at photo about video games and someone came on saying this
All you gamers are one day going to get the coded word that will awaken the "sleeper" that has been programmed into your tiny little brains, as a result of the endless hours you have spent listening to the subliminal messages that all these violent and mind numbing games have. You will then be unleashed on to an unsuspecting and unprepared world, where you will reap havoc raping, pillaging and plundering all over the countryside. The only saving grace is that because of the years of game playing, your actual physical condition, lack of balance and outdoor real life experience will so handicap you, that your attempt at world domination will probably fail. Ha
At first I thought it might have been a troll but I looked at his profile and unfortunately he appears to be a real person.

Now, I'm not normally the kind of person to post on random photos on facebook but this is one of the few things I will openly speak out about and defend. It got me to thinking about what else I will always try to defend when it is attacked. I will always try to defend things like video games and sports because these are two major parts of my life. I am most likely to defend something else though if someone is ignorantly attacking something like the above "video games are evil" comments.

So, what about everyone else? Are there certain topics you will always try to defend if they are attacked?

Uh... yeah, that was probably someone trolling. Real people can troll too you know.

If that was really his view then he wasn't worth arguing with.

Although, yeah... I imagine that any attempt to conquer the world with an army of gamers would go pretty poorly. The enemy would soon learn to attack as soon as a new Zero Punctuation video goes up. Then they'd cut off our internet and wait until we went catatonic.

I'll always try to defend women's rights and feminism IRL, I think some sections of the Internet aren't worth the energy.

There're a lot of other things but that's just the main one that comes to mind.

I get pretty defensive about my degrees as most people seem to think that they're useless which isn't true.

Freedom of sexuality, namely homosexuality and incest (I haven't yet formed a concrete opinion regarding bestiality. That's something I'm still thinking about). I really hate to see people oppressed based upon such a personal thing (where they often have no choice over) as their sexuality. Regarding marriage, it's hard for me to campaign for marriage rights as I have no care for marriage in any form at all (though if asked, I'd say yeah, go for it). To defend this topic for me, is mostly a tolerance and legal thing. I'd defend them so it became commonly accepted and legal by the general populace, rather than heatedly debated or, in some corners of the world, even outright despised.

Edit: I know this is probably going to be a very common answer on this forum, a kind of preaching-to-the-choir scenario. But still, it's one of the few topics I can think of where my stance would never change.

Gay rights would be a big one for me. The usefulness of science and critical thinking in schools. Really, the importance of proper education in general.

The right to my opinion i guess ? Because i tend to saythings like " i feel uncomfortable around homosexuals "( among other things ) and people read that to mean i am homophobic . But i'm not . I have no problems with gay people , in fact , gay men are some of the nicest people i ever met ( no so much lesbians but whatever ) , but they make me real uncomfortable. Seeing two men together makes me cringe . That being said , homosexuals are people too , and they can do whatever they like, where evere they like , when ever they like . It's my burden to bare not theirs .

The medium of comics. It's just as good a medium as movies, literature, music, etc.

Also gay rights. No explanation needed.

Also feminism, which to me means opposing unfair gender discrimination of all kinds.

That post in the OP has to someone trolling. It was slightly too comedic to be some nutjob's genuine opinion. I think so anyway.

Well I would defend anime in the occasional times it comes up on this site, people seem less tolerable of it in general on 'Scapist for some reason. If somebody seriously calls anime a "genre" again...

Oh and all those people going on about art and gaming are going at it the wrong way, it's not "games are art" which can be countered so hard by just pointing at CoD or similar because that's an absolute statement. It's "games have the capacity to be art" which is more accurate and easy to prove by pointing at Bastion or some such.

I would defend some of the feminism shit but really, it's not worth the effort and since I can understand both sides of the argument 99% of the time I would rather not pick a side and risk a Flame War so I don't even post on those threads.

Annnnnnd as a simple observation, how come nobody thinks of Homophobia as a y'know, genuine phobia? Like people have Arachnophobia and such and they can't help feeling deathly afraid of spiders even if they KNOW said spider can't hurt them. Nope just offhandedly dismiss people with "oh it's 2013, stop being such a homophobe lol"

I'm just throwing random shit out now so imma stop. Being extremely understanding of a lot of different opinions and non-judgemental to a fault is tough man XP

-members of my family other than myself

-nuclear power (in general, I will not deny there are examples of stupidity)

-principles of legal and ethical equality

-modern human innovation (in the context of people bemoaning the "good old days", conveniently forgetting just how badly that same time period sucked for those living through it)

I will always defend my right as a human being to sometimes oppose the views and tactics of feminists and defend the rights of men. It seems that anyone on this site that doesn't always agree with feminism is attacked as a "Evil MRA" or a misogynist, so I'm going to defend people who have legitimate oppositions to the feminist movement. Feminist literally has most of the internet to defend them, they can cry for help and get it in so many places, yet the opposite will get banned or dismissed as a wife-beating woman hater. Being a feminist is seen as a good thing in most areas of the internet, whereas being a MRA (can we find another word for this? MRA makes us sound like a terrorist group) is seen as a terrible, misogynistic thing that should be stopped.

I will always try to defend the truth. Have gotten a bad rep in a few places because I didn't tow the "company line" due the facts.

Freedom of speech, freedom to not have your human rights infringed, freedom of sexuality (bar child molestation and non-consensual harm), freedom of gender identity, LGBT rights, gay marriage (even though I think marriage, straight or gay, as a concept itself is pretty stupid, it doesn't mean that everyone else has to) women's rights, porn as a potential art form (trust me, there is some pretty artistic porn out there; you're just looking in the wrong places), anti-censorship, science, truth, Atheism, Anti-Theism, the right to end your own life (or have someone else end yours if you can't yourself), abortion, manga/anime, cats, animal rights, anti-animal testing, etc.

Because most people that have arachnophobia don't actually hate spiders. There's nothing inherently wrong with having an uncontrollable aversion to seeing two gay men kissing (because, let's face it, it's not something you see every day, and it's going to take a while longer for everyone to get used to male-male affection in ways other than wrestling - as long as you're aware of just why you feel awkward about it and don't say, "Hey, guys, stop that because I feel weird and my not-feeling-weird is the most important thing right now"), but when it gets the point where you're actively campaigning for legislation against their right to marriage, then there's something definitely wrong.

I have ophidiophobia (fear of snakes), but I'm not going around telling everyone to kill any snake that they see because "Remember that story of a serpent tempting Eve to eat the apple and then God kicked her and Adam from Paradise down to Earth? Yeah, that's going to happen again if we don't stop these darned land eels from pushing us into Hell!"

Pro Wrestling, video games, LOTR, freedom of speech, Disturbed, and of course, my rights in general.
Probably tons of other things that escape my mind at the moment.

Sport games

It drives me absolutely insane to go onto these forums sometimes to see all the cheap shots made against sport games. No, they are not just "stat updates" every year and my opinion of the speaker plummets every time I hear someone that statement come out of someone's mouth/keyboard. It's perfectly reasonable for someone to not enjoy sport games but to look down upon me because I do is ri-fucking-diculous.
