This thread is for the people who use the internet as their greatest tool. I honestly believe that there's nothing you can't learn on the internet, you just gotta look in the right places.

What skill have you taught yourself that are usualy known for being taught by a teacher or a school (examples: piano, a language) and things that the average joe isn't expected to know (examples: fixing a broken tv, various grappling holds). And anything generally interesting that is worth sharing can also go here.

I'm interested to hear what skills the Escapist has. Also maybe I'll learn a thing or two in this thread.

Well, it's nothing big but I learned to make tie knots from the Internet. Could have asked my parents but the Internet was closer.

Also the Internet has improved my spelling, my reading and my general culture, but these are really small, aren't they?

I've learned a cool way to tie my shoelaces. It's now the only way I do it.

Here [http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/ianknot.htm] is a link to the instructions.

That's all I can think of right now. It might not seem impressive, but it saves me at least a second of two every time I put my shoes on. It has to add up to something.

I've learned a lot of things even without the help of the internet. Things like:

- playing the piano
- playing the drums
- human beatbox
- dancing (and I don't mean the "club type" of dancing, I mean real, professional level type stuff)
- gymnastics (as in backflips & such)
- cooking
- the English language (learned that by watching Cartoon Network for 8 years :)

Just a few things fro the top of my head. There are other but I can't think of any at the moment.

The internet taught me how to type, and this site improved my social skills.
Playing MTG at eight taught me some reading skills, although my parents did teach me to read at all.

Mechanics would be the biggest one. Generally when I want to modify or repair my car in someway, I research it on the internet. Most the time you'll find some helpful user somewhere has posted a guide with photos and an explanation which helps get the job done.

For the moment just english, but I'm studying german, music theory and programming on my own. For me it's just easier to pursue some skills on my own, it gives me more motivation, I mean, it should be pretty awesome to hear someone say "Wow, you speak german?" and you can go like "Oh, it's nothing. I just picked it up naturally... On my own...No help at all... Please say I'm smart and love me."

The internet has indirectly taught me a lot. It's at the very least piqued my curiosity for a great many things, and when I need to satisfy my curiosity, I usually purchase books through the internet. What it has directly taught me, however, and I'm sure this holds true for many, is computer troubleshooting. Seriously, being the "Computer Guy" is fucking easy when you have a basic understanding of computers and Google.

I've used good old fashioned books to teach myself Japanese since just before I got here. I'm certainly not fluent yet, but I can easily survive and hold conversations on a great variety of subjects. I think the biggest thing I need right now is to build more vocabulary (including more kanji).

I taught myself how to play the bass guitar through the Internet, and I'm currently teaching myself Italian (and soon Korean).

The internet taught me how to sew and, as an art major, has provided me with a LOT of tutorials about digital painting and layers. Also how to root my phone. Yay technology!

Huh, the exact two things I want to learn via the internet got any links to some sites to use?

OT: Not learned much really, taught myself how to tie some knots because it seems like I'm always getting into situations where I need to tie things together and quite a few writing techniques so that I stop writing crap and start with some actually good stories.

I learned lots of things by myself. Most of my knowledge is between the things I watch, the internet, and my own life experiences. To say that all these things make up who I am would be an understatement.

Well I'm kind of cheating when it comes to the language learning, I ordered a 'Rosetta Stone' package (if I link it is this classed as advertising?) online, but I still do it mainly sat in front of the computer.

As for the bass, there wasn't any individual site I used, I floated about on various 'how to' style pages, and glanced on forums and things. Once I'd learnt the basics, and felt comfortable with it, I looked for the bass tabs to some songs, then eventually started coming up with my own melodies.

The internet taught me how to mod.

Well, not the internet itself but all the people who posted modding tutorials around.

Nothing special; mostly just home repairs like how to replace oven parts 'n such.
