Okay, so if anyone has seen my recent posts, they know I'm excited for Deus Ex Human Revolution. Why? Because it's a modern version of the Deus Ex games, a game series where the only thing that was holding me back was the age of the franchise.

A couple months ago, I did try it, and it kicked my ass. Multiple times. So, I gave up. It was clearly an old-school shooter and beat me down much more than Doom and Duke Nukem did.

So, now I want to go back and try it once more. But, I'm uncertain about spending the money for the Steam version (if I play it, I'm not playing a pirated version).

Can someone maybe tell me the appeal of it? Maybe a bit how the game works level up wise? Or if I should just play with cheats and play it for the story?

Quicksave is your friend.

The appeal of the game is the non-linear level design with multiple paths to reach your objective. Stealth usually works the best, but if you like you can blast your way through.

I wouldn't bother shooting, at least not to begin with when you don't have many skill points invested in it. You don't level up, you just get skill points, and when you get enough, you spend them.

The appeal is in the flexibility of the missions, the approach you can take, etc. If your main objective is to save some hostages, the game will simply continue if you blow them up.

The tutorial is very good for explaining the mechanics, so make sure you play that. The first mission can be a bit difficult to get your head around though, so you might want to just run around to see all the various routes for your objective and how the level design works.

The game is so varied that if you're shooting people, you're almost doing it wrong.

Quick save requires me to constantly save and when I do, I could end up quick saving into an impossible situation.

Again, still have no idea how leveling works. Is it based on how many peeps I take out?

Why are you posting about Deus Ex when you could be playing Deus Ex?

(In response to your actual post, you've gotta stealth. It's theoretically possible but in practice very difficult to beat Deus Ex as a pure shooter. Generally speaking, winning in that game is all about having the advantage, whether that advantage takes the form of the element of surprise, a hacked turret, a big-ass rocket launcher, or an explosive trap. Also, there's a guy - I forget exactly who - who gives you the choice of a mini-crossbow, something else, and a GEP gun. Go for the GEP gun, because it's a rocket launcher that fires homing rockets. That makes difficult shooting sections go a lot smoother.)

Just the freedom in how you can do things, be it stealth or rambo and so on.

The biggest display of this i think is that you can go through the ENTIRE game and not kill a single person if you try hard enough, though thier is 1 character you have to exploit game design not to kill.

I think it plays best as a stealth game, not as a regular shooter, at least before you invest some points in your Denton's shooting skills.

Important note: the stun baton (or whatever it's called) is your most powerful weapon early in the game. If you can get behind the enemy unseen, zap their legs for an instant and silent stun.

Also, exploration gives you experience points, try to see as much of the map as you can.

You get experience from exploration and completing objectives.

I've played the tutorial, but I never got very far in the Liberty Island mission. Every just got really ambiguous really fast.

Should I just watch a playthrough for the first mission and use it as a guide?

I don't know... personnally, I always take the crossbow (tranquilizer dart are more powerful than any rocket ;)

Pros: It's a stealth game that feels like it could have been a straight shooter if you had taken the boring path. You can take multiple paths to the same objective, whether you get there by picking locks, hacking computers, shooting dudes, blowing up any shit in your way, or sneaking behind all the defenses is entirely up to you. There is no leveling up, you complete objectives and get points to spend on skills. Sometimes you get a new augmentation or augmentation upgrade, but you can worry about that when you come to it.

Cons: The voice acting is horrible. Like, really, really bad.

If you are having trouble shooting shit (and gunplay is AWFUL in the first mission), there is an upgrade in the first mission which when attached to a gun, negates all that accuracy bullshit.

It's in some underground section after you go down a ramp nearby some industrial craates you can climb. If you hack the box to let you past the electrical barrier, there is a laser pointer upgrade in one of the boxes.

Once you get it you can put it on your standard pistol, or you can tough out the mission because you get a stealth pistol from the HQs armory afterwards. Stealth Pistol + laser pointer = easy pickings. You can pretty much play it as a stealthy FPS at that point and not have to worry about the silly accuracy stat (note: you gotta turn on the laser pointer every time you draw the weapon, the key is "[" i think).

With this set up plus whatever weapons you wanna use like gas grenades or more aggressive weapons, you'll be fine. You wont really need to waste any exp points on pistol and you can pump em into other stuff. And if you really wanna take the stealthy route, the lockpick/omnitool glitch helps a lot too. Basically some doors and devices require "x" amount of picks/tools, but you can bypass all of these with only having to use 1 at a time. Start picking/hacking, push F1 to bring up the inventory, and leave the inventory up for some times (however long it takes to pick that many locks on average), and BAM!. Combined with a good hacking stat and you got a great means of stealth play, and your stealth pistol can dispatch people real easily as well.

Well...that's how I played, picking off a guy 50ft away with a stealth pistol is great and won't alert other guards if they aren't in sight.

Oh, yeah, crossbow is more useful overall. But you find them everywhere, and if stealth is your Plan A, a big-ass rocket launcher is the ultimate Plan B.

It's already been mentioned in here. There's no level up mechanic in Deus Ex. You get skill points from completing various objectives, exploring hidden areas, etc. You can use those points to increase your skill with, say, Pistols or Hacking.

Killing people, in general, does not give you skill points (there are some situations, but they're definitely the minority).

In other words, no, Deus Ex doesn't play like WoW.

Thank God.

The problem is that you're thinking of the game as a shooter when it is a hybrid of a bunch of genres. Just play it smart and pay attention to your surroundings. Also, quick save tons as well which I do because part of the fun of Deus Ex is just experimenting to see what different actions do in the world. Do not try to take the front entrance in the beginning, instead go to the back and climb the ladder... You can also lure enemies to friendly robots and soldiers in order for them to do the work for you. Your aim pretty much sucks at the begining but mostly you can avoid enemies fairly easy. Also, if you see a lone enemy that would be better to take out then just sneak past, sneak behind him and use your baton on his back, not his head. didn't know that last one till recently. Also if you want to play it as a more of an FPS game you can always just restart the game and put it on easy as well...

Once you get later on and level up your skills and choose augs you can eventually play it very easily as a FPS I think. Never tried that way myself.

You level up by exploring areas or progressing with the story.

after you finish missions you get xp it has no basis on how many you kill/knock out. you can then spend it on skills as you see fit. i would suggest computers as an early unlock. it might not be the most obvious one but it lets you hack into atms and steal money or security systems and turn cameras off. as has been said at the start its alot harder to run and gun. your guns are not all that accurate you dont have alot of healing things and no armour.

later on you get a healing aug that helps ALOT. try keeping to the shadows as much as you can. take on enemys one at a time if you have the chance, head shots are what you want. let the target come to you as that way you have spent enough time not moving to have your aim the best it can be.
hitting with a tranc dart and then running away can be a good tactic.

Well, a stealth/gun playthrough is a good way to go, xp is earned through exploting and objectives, also dont upgrade the normal pistol, you get a silenced one after the 1st level, that once i hade a scope, several accuracy and damage mods and a high pistol skill, became the deathbringer

Deus Ex is officially my favorite game of all time. I've finished it three times, and I have save files for every mission in the game so that I can replay a specific passage. And yet... the first time I tried to play it, I also didn't get past the first mission and quickly gave up. Then trailers for Human Revolution started coming out, and I decided to give it another go. This time, I beat the first mission and the game had me. I wondered why I enjoyed it so much more than the last time, but then I realized it was the approach I had chosen. When I first tried Deux Ex, I had recently played the original Half Life, and was expecting a similar experience. It was inevitable that I would be disapointed, Half Life was a precursor to the thrilling roller coaster sripted sequence shooters such as the Call of Duty series. But Deus Ex has a much more measured pace. You can shoot your way in and out of situations if you want, but you must always, ALWAYS think and analyze said situations before you act. If you play it as a straight up shooter, it wont be much fun, the shooting mechanics are stiff and the enemy AI is pretty dumb. Combat is simply not Deus Ex's strong point. But if you play it as a stealth game, thats when it becomes something special. I believe the game "only" costs ten bucks on steam, definitely give it a try.

It is funny, cause I had almost the reverse experience. I really enjoyed both Deus Ex and even Deus Ex invisible war (actualy not sure if I played the latter yet) so when I saw this really hyped PC FPS game called Half Life 2 being rentable at blockbuster for the regular xbox I rented Half Life 2. I hated the game, it was so linear and then like mandatory vehicle sections so i just stopped playing. Never even got the gravity gun which sounded interesting.

The funny thing is that I don't even like most straight up stealth games that much either.

I just like how Deus Ex levels are designed, the story, and ability to save everywhere helps a lot because part of the fun of the games is experimenting to see what actions do.
