Article from The Guardian newspaper listing great games that are not as fondly remembered as the author thinks they should be.

I've only ever heard of a few of them and only ever played two (Pyjamarama and The Neverhood, both great games) but anyone want to comment, or to suggest a few he's missed?

The first Tenchu was one of my favourite games back in the day. It'd most likely be frustrating as fuck if I played it now though, especially that one Boss fight where the guy had a freaking trained bear.

Freedom Fighters was also great fun.

I only ever played the demo for Vib Ribbon.

Yeah, I've heard of a few of these games. And I probably wouldn't mind playing some of them someday. Like Gitaroo Man or The Neverhood.

I'll add games like Metal Arms: Glitch in the System. That game was friggen awesome. Shame that it never got the sequels that were planned for it. :(

...It seems like almost everything I want to say comes down to just bitter whining, so I'm going to avoid a lot of the stuff I was going to say and just say these two things.

1. Boooo The Warriors. Boooooooo
2. Needs more Zookeeper (or just Taito in general. I feel like Taito as a whole has been very under appreciated in gaming's history)

The Neverhood was one of those point-and-click adventures that had brilliant stories and amazing artwork, but the gameplay was just a bit annoying. See also - Ceremony of Innocence (which would be on my personal list), Myst, Starship Titanic (I've never been more disappointed by a game), Seventh Guest (Feeling looonely?) etc.

There's a reason we remember Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle etc - they managed to get that balance better. But still - I'm glad The Neverhood exists for its sheer chutzpah. Claymation game? Come on!

Hey now. I remember quite a few of those games.

Especially Sacrifice. Sacrifice is still something of a cult favorite, even around these parts, where people consider Dragon Age Origins a hoary old classic.

I played Croc as a kid too! I was terrible at it though so it didn't really take. (I was more like 7 or 8, and I've never been good at platform games). I found Spyro easier to play. I'd like to have another go at Croc if only for the nostalgia, but I think we got rid of our copy. I also had the sequel on GameBoy Colour and got a bit further with that.

*Sigh* yeah, it would be nice to see a new Tenchu game come out that took full advantage of modern gaming tech and finally got with the times and updated its stealth.

Oh hey it's... Devil Dice...I still don't get that game >.<!

I've heard of most of these and I think about half of them qualify for "cult classic" status. I've only played two of them though. The original Tenchu hasn't aged very well but otherwise didn't leave much of an impression on me.

Eternal Darkness on the other hand... I hear about this game all the time as the pinnacle of survival horror but it's just not scary. At all.

Before you you stab me with a pitchfork let me explain:

Early in the game you get access to spells that restore health and sanity, and if you walk around in one of the many empty rooms to refill your mana you can cast these spells as many times as you want. Add to this the fact that almost all the weapons are melee based so you don't have to worry about ammo, and the fact that the non-tank controls are good enough that you can practically run circles around the zombies and the game is... yeah not scary. Not to mention the "explore as different characters in different times" gimmick was really an excuse to reuse the same 5 or 6 levels two or three times each. I think most people just like it because it was their first exposure to a Lovecraft-like mythos. And by "Lovecraft-like" I mean that it's exactly the same as the Cthulhu Mythos but with different names.

Ok now you can stab me with a pitchfork.

Vib Ribbon! I remember that! Man that game... confused me :'] So trippy!

Some good stuff on that list. I almost bought Freedom Fighters today, I remember really liking the demo, but I decided to buy Hitman: Contracts instead because it's the only Hitman game I don't have. Maybe next time!

I remember Croc and Croc 2, I played the heck outta them both as a kid. They were really pretty great, I think I might still have them both kicking around somewhere... Though I could say that about a lot of old games these days...

On Topic:

I actually still have a few games off that list, such as Tenchu, Vib-Ribbon, ChuChu Rocket etc

I remember a few others that I never had but played a demo of or played at a friends house. They were some decent games.

As far as other games that time forgot... I really enjoyed Pokemon: Snap as a kid, and am still disappointed there's not been a new one (Even if the Wii U seems like the perfect platform for such a game...)

I also spent quite a lot of time playing Alfred Chicken on the gameboy, I barely remember it despite that though...

No Vagrant Story or Brave Fencer Musashi?

Bah. Both of those deserve that list (despite BFM not actually being all that great)

Vagrant Story is one of the best JRPGs ever made. Love the bleak atmosphere, the weird, but difficult and satisfying, combat, the great story and the translation that still stands as possibly the best Japanese -> English translation ever. The translated script is possibly one of the best scripts in gaming, period.

I got a $50 Amazon gift card for Christmas and said, "Dammit, I'm buying Vagrant Story!"

Then I saw the $102.00 price tag for "CD with case and booklet"... So I bought FF Origins, Chronicles, and Anthology instead.

I still want a copy of Vagrant Story, as I've never finished the whole game, but I NEED to have the whole package or else I just feel dirty...

I've always wanted to play Gitaroo Man and Vib-Ribbon.

Also, Alter Ego is a really unique game. and its completely online for all to enjoy.
