Over the many years, all major civilizations have had thier fair share of troubles, and the people need someone to blame. So instead of taking responsibility, the party incharge blames a third, unrelated party. The most noticable scapegoat in recent history is obviously the Jews being blamed by the Nazi Propaganda.

Since the American economy is currently having trouble and current wealthy lifestyles are in jeopardy, who will be our scapegoat for this current trouble?

Bush. I think that covers it pretty thoroughly.
It's really easy to blame him, after all, being an awful public speaker.

I thought immigrants and/or specifically Mexican's were Americas scape goat? Immigrants from the EU seem to be England's scapegoat 'coming over here taking our jobs' but they (the immigrants) can't win; when there was all that news about Polish people going home we got mad too 'going home giving us all our jobs back' type mad.

(For the record the views about immigrants here arn't mine ;)).

My guess? Americans globally and 'Foreigners' locally. Most people outside of the US have taken to our own over-publicizing of our own role in this downturn in stride and again used our self centered stance against us. Those of us In the states will instead hear alot of people saying that it was because of people coming up from mexico as well as outsourcing that resulted in fewer jobs. The latter is true in a roundabout way, though due in no small part to the 'bottom dollar' mentality and unwillingness to change large old companies have shown as well as the fact that the labor is indeed cheaper and the corporations of the world are all flailing to some extent or another to cope with the reality that boarders are growing more and more symbolic all the time. We are about to hit a period of mass transition and there will be scapegoating aplenty but what I think it will boil down to is blaming the people not from the US if you are here, and blaming the US Political and Ecenomic leaders if your not.

(UK) I think short sellers were the initial scapegoats. Then when the government banned it & the problem just kept getting worse it became the banking system in general. In a few years time it will be the government, the one thats in power after the next election that is. & in 15years it will be the baby boomer generation. We've got great things to look forward to :-D

Thanks to those of you took this seriously......And to those of you who didn't, I don't believe Ancient Gay Rapping Swedes (I am Swedish by the way) are the cause of global economic decline

Chuck Norris.

Well I blame him...

Anyways, probably since we have so many slackers and lazy people (or so I am to believe from being surrounded by them (not entirely, I do know people who work hard, just not enough)) probably the last generation.

Well that's what you would say, isn't it?

In all seriousness, the government gets a really nasty rap among our generation. I'd put them highly on any list. And i did.

Actualy every answer given save some items (1-4, 7, 9, 13-16 and 19) from ultrajoe's list have at one point or another been used as scapegoats for issues raised during this generation so they can all be considered serious answers even if they were given as satire.

I have to agree with what others are saying, the government is always going to be blamed in this day and age, it's sadly apparent that this generation is attempting to create their own identity and , I'm not sure if this is the best way to say it but here it goes anyways, counter-culture. Everyday people now seem to think that they know all the answers and are able to change the world, they think that they can stop global warming on their own and that the government is the enemy, out to stop world happiness and only looking for personal gain. All this semi-ranting is ment to show that people in the 21st century are convinced that the governments are the cause of all problems therefore, the government is the cause of economic decline.

In the mythical land of Australia under your bed, we blame a giant bald koala called John Winston Howard, and the American corporations/government aside.

Everyone. Yes, everyone is to blame for this economic trouble.

It is our culture of borrowing and spending that caused this trouble. People who buy new TVs who don't actually have the money to do so, people who use credit cards. If you are currently in debt you are part of the problem. There's no problem in borrowing, everyone does, it is how we get by. Its just that most can not pay back their mortgages, thus people owe others money, then banks sell off these mortgages to others and people borrow more money to pay off their current debts.

In short. Its OUR fault, we were asking for this to happen.

I think as a whole Europe and America are blamed for the majority of problems in the world.

Africa, Mexico, majority of South America, India...
It's a never ending list.
