So, yesterday was my first day at University and with 4 hrs of breaks I had a lot of time to think about shit going on around me.

- What idiot thought Summer in Australia was a good time to start learning? It's too hot to think.

- $3 for a fucking bottle of water?! Why don't you wear a fucking mask while you're at it?

- Look, I'm sure it's nice to have a non-smoking campus and all but how about doing something about the kamikaze fucking cyclists flying around with disregard to public safety?

- Why isn't there a law for exposed midrifts allowing anyone to walk up and stick a finger in their bellybutton until they dry-retch?

- More Africans here than I expected. About as many East Asians and South Asians as I expected, though. Good, because if I ended up surrounded by noone but middle class white teenagers I'd probably open up a vein.

- Who's the fucking idiot who forgot sunscreen? I am.

- Gah... this free refill water tastes like bore water.

- Oh for the love of... FUCKING PROTO-MULLETS... yeah yeah call them 'mohawks' but that "just shave the sides out" cut? that's what led to mullets in the 80s. YOU HAVE A PROTO-MULLET!

- Why does this university hate my bad knee? I curse all your steps and could you make your wheelchair ramps any more embarassing and inconvenient to use?

- 800+ students for Psych 1A? Why?

- They're prescription sunglasses and I can't be fucked digging out my regular glasses. Deal with it.

- Holy shit the gender ratio in this course rocks... if only a few more of them weren't 20 years younger than me.

- I need to find a better place to have a smoke.

- GAAAAAHH... I don't want to 'get involved in the social side of University'. I did that last time I was at Uni which is why I'm back here doing undergrad studies again.

- Oh joy, not only do I have to endure public transport but my first lecture is started with a song. A John Lennon song. I couldn't be enjoying myself more if the lecturer stabbed me in the eye with a pen.

So, people, do you remember any strong impressions from your first day at a tertiary education institute? For them that have just started tertiary education, how've you found it? For those yet to reach the promised land of academia, what do you hope for?

My first day in an Australian Uni was pretty alright... until I got on the train home and was insulted by a bunch of racist high schoolers.

Why are you Aussies so racist?! D=

My thoughts on my first day at university (5 years ago, I graduated since).

- Why do people keep trying to hand me things? What is all this crap? Job advertisements, student elections, I don't give a shit about any of this stuff.

- Why do people keep asking me to join their bible study? I swear, these people see me and make a bee line right in my direction. How can I spit in their faces without seeming too rude?

- The headphones mean "piss off"

- $150 for this book? Great, how much for a digital copy, I mean it must be cheaper right? Oh, the digital copy is also $150? WHY THE FUCK WOULD SOMEONE BUY THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN SELL IT BACK LATER!

- Is the professor REALLY taking attendance? There's over 300 people in this goddamn class!

Because the ones that insulted you are retards.
Seriously you'd think living in a multi-cultural society would stamp out racism but the idiots persist... Still it's better than other countries, man I really wouldn't want to be an Arabic individual living in America.

The question has to be asked, which uni?

I have a class at La Trobe Uni this semester. It's a massive difference compared to RMIT Melbourne. They actually have grass and more than 2 trees out there.

my god, first day of uni is so fucking chaotic. Its worse when your a graduate there working, cause you cant go and have lunch in the campus centre without at least 4 first years asking where building x is. and to top it off, some bright spark decided that the first, most chaotic week of semester is the best time to close half the uni down for a state funeral of all things. all condolences to the family of the deceased, but week one is not the time to bring in everyone from the prime minister down for a funeral, especially if they did it a week earlier, when there was noone there.

The 4th of April will be a glorious day. Parking will be available again and 30% of those JAFFYs (Just Another Fucking First Year) will be gone.

The census day is the best day of the year.

Perosnally for me, 2 years ago today wasnt so bad, except the 8am start... was horrible, i fell asleep during the lecture, a good female friend of mine woke me up, we walked the bloddy long distance between our lecture theatre and the hub, where we had to wait 4 hours before the next lecture, i then slept a bit, got some good and then slept a bit more...

Then the next lecture, i was awake for about, 35 minutes, then again this female friend woek up after the lecture, we parted ways and i walked home...

Why the hell is there so much distance between any of the building that i need to be in!? I mean seriously, i understand that different buildings were built at different times, but like, why must i walk from one side of campus to the other within 5-10 minutes?
At a leasurly pace that'd be about a 20 minute walk, plus extra time for getting lost inbetween....

And god damn mosquitos... so many of them, i cant stand it... That and they are immune to insect repellant...

But anyways, Third year atm, still trudging along, and have worked out how to arrange my schedule better, if only i hadnt waited so long to do it... but atleast i dont start before noon :D

I have to say, its a pain until census day, and then my god, the crowds, the car parks, everything just opens up, how glorious a day

You wouldn't happen to be at Adelaide uni at all? Sounds a lot like it haha

Anyway, always bring your own water, it's always easier. I usually take a 1.25L bottle and it easily lasts the day.

Lastly, this is really nit picky but it's Autumn now :p

I remember my suprise at how many idiots made their way into University.
Luckily the lot of them got weeded out throughout the first couple of semesters.

The Arabs don't get too much crap here; that's a misconception I think. There's racism but it's not too overt. And interestingly, the white people aren't really the racist ones. Asians and Blacks HATE each other. And both of them hate the Latinos even more. It's really bad in places like LA where the gangs are.

As other people may say ... they were probably complete idiots, I mean they ARE high schoolers ... when are they smart?
...
Well apart from me cause I was a sort of loner who ignored most people. :D

Just ignore them, easiest thing.

OT:

Funny thing, I just started my university course (In Aus too) this Monday.
- It isn't that hot over here ... well not lately..
- Isn't three dollars the norm? But I guess I do take my own water.
- No crazy cyclists at my Uni.
- Agreed.
- We have variety in culture diversity.
- I don't need sunscreen ... yet.
- The water was not bad.
- Eeeew, I have only seen them once.
- Steps ahoy here too ... with hill included.
- Hot damn that IS a lot. We have less.
- Don't have glasses.
- Too shy to talk to girls. >.<
- I don't smoke.
- I'm balancing social and studies. I just do the club stuff.
- Sounds terrifying, but I do share your hate of the public transport ... I really dislike it. D:<

But my first day, even if it was JUST two lectures was really ... heavy on me. I had more fun today where I got to hang out in the Anime club. :D

Are you rich? You'll probably need to be.

Having thoroughly cocked it up the first time thanks to some substance abuse problems, I'd absolutely love to go to uni and do things properly, but in the modern world the only way I'm going to be able to afford that is if I win the lottery :-(

My first day at uni was fantasytic for me, well ok I arrived in the wrong room but other than that it went along fine. Funny now the people who I hang out with on the first day didn't became my friends per say. I mean sure we did get along fine but days later we just hang out with the other student who we got along better with.

rich? i wish! been on and off unemployed for past 4 years living only off of dole and the occasional temp work here and there. Job market ain't gonna get better down in my town so i thought i might as well go to my local college since most of the work in my area is part time or weekend anyway so doing both is manageable. My local college isn't a university (therefore alot cheaper too) which is good cos sod getting 7 grand in debt or did the lib-dumbs and tories raise it again when i wasn't looking?
