Some of you may remember a video from some time ago of anime-style animation of Empire TIE fighters shooting up Rebel ships. Turns out, that was only a teaser. The full animation is now available below.

That woman and the older pilot look familiar, was this made by the same guy who did the Doctor Who anime fan short?

It was great though, 10/10 would watch as a full movie or series. Why can't we have this Disney?

Star Wars has always been so much cooler than the Jedi and THIS is why!!! I always thought the struggle between the Empire and the Rebellion was prime territory to explore in a serious show (and NOT some damn Saturday morning cartoon). There's a buck to be made here, Disney! Hope you're paying attention.

I'm not a big anime fan, but that was glorious. Space combat has always been my favorite part of Star Wars, and this delivered in spades.

I loved all the references and call-outs to Tie Fighter, from the HUD elements to the dreaded tone of a missile lock. I had to restrain myself from tapping the appropriate keys as the pilots initiated their warmup cycles and flew into battle. They even managed to sneak in a brief cameo of the Flight Officer! A few elements were borrowed from other games as well, such as the homing cluster missiles from Rogue Squadron and the Interdictor Cruiser's warhead jammer from Empire at War.

My only major nitpick was the music. Generic electric guitars just aren't a good fit for Star Wars. I would have preferred a score more heavily inspired by themes from the game:

Also, why were utility tugs part of the first wave? I can understand using them to recover the Rebel transport, but you'd think they'd wait until the starfighter opposition was taken out first.

Not a big fan of the art style, but even so that was fun to watch. The animator really has a thing for zooming in on peoples eyes and the swooping pan shot effect but nitpicking aside it was well done. Also can't say the music really fit it all that well either, Star Wars has always been about the big sweeping orchestral scores after all, but that's more of a personal preference.

Overall not bad, not bad at all.

I didn't really like the music either at first, but then it started to remind me of 80's saturday morning cartoons, and then I loved it.

OT: This was pretty fucking rad! More than the Star Wars stuff this gave me flashbacks of the old bulky anime style of the 80's and 90's. It looked very similar to the Transformers cartoons and Gunbuster. It even felt like it had a bit of Heavy Metal in there with the kind of hokey run animations, though I don't know if that was deliberate.

It's funny how more traditional animated action can get me way more excited than the realistic blockbuster kind.

I suspect it may be because they were going to upload it to youtube... I mean, the whole premise is potentially asking for trouble, but music seems to bring down the wrath of content ID BS much faster than anything else does...

Or, it could just be a random decision of course... XD

According to the description, it was meant to be based on old 80's anime, which would probably explain things like the music choice, art style, and the like. Admittedly I'm not a fan of the music choice either, but if that's what would have fit, then that's what fits!

Yup I recongise that artsytle (old anime look) and that username anywhere and man I competely forgot about him til now. Yeah his work had improved alot!

Also while for once the Empire were competent for once, I still find it hard to root for them.

I absolutely love it. Can we please have a whole series of this? I can enjoy the art style, it really brings out all the ships, walkers and so on. The action is a bit more high paced than the old movies but still great and I still really want to see a version of star wars that is not unbelievable good vs stupid evil.

This needs way more exposure, if only to make this guy's time and effort worth something.

This would make an excellent SW series. Disney, hire this guy, give him a team, and make make the old EU X-wing series into anime movies. Probably make some TIE stories too to balance it out. That space battle was glorious. My only nit-pick is the Interdictor cruiser having a hangar and being nearly as big as a Star Destroyer.

Edit: I guess they do have hangars. I'm ashamed I didn't remember that.

I think we can go one step further and say Disney could use this to revive their old hand drawn animation studio but I could wishing the impossible.

That was amazing, thank you for sharing that with us. I only got to play a few of the rouge squadron games, makes me wish I was around for the TIE Fighter hayday.

Imperial pilots sporting those haircuts? Yeah, not buying it. Having your hair done like the chick or the young guy is probably grounds for summary execution.

I don't, the Empire symbolises unity and stability, an order in the chaos of the galaxy. We saw this after the fall of the empire with the monarchists and republicans of the New Republic unable to insure galactic stability and eventually the whole thing fell appart, with the Imperial Remnant being the only thing which survived into the age of the new Sith Empire as its only opponent.

Assuming as witnessed by their prowess in the video, ace pilots tend to get a lot of leeway.
