You heard me right. According to a high-ranking source at Crytek, Timesplitters 4 is in development. The developers are Crytek UK(formerly Free Radical, who made the other Timesplitters games).

Its being developed for next-gen consoles. Crytek has apparently been saving up for the next gen, and is now putting that money to work.

http://www.videogamer.com/news/xbox_720_likely_at_e3_2012_crytek_on_board_2.html

This makes me very sad. For one, this means I have to now get another console to enjoy Timesplitters 4(if it doesn't come out on the PC, of course). This also means that the next gen is coming soon, which is really bad. You know how companies are all complaining about the massive price needed to make games? You know how games are getting shorter, less complex, and less origional? The next generation will make all those problems even worse.

Though if your putting more and more money into games, and the games are getting shorter, simpler, and more samey, I must ask... where the fuck is the money going?

There's also the fact that Crytek UK's last project, Crysis 2's multiplayer, was wholly mediocre. If Timesplitters 4 has regenerating health and weapon limits, I may go insane with rage.

On the other hand, FUCK YES TIMESPLITTERS 4!!

Anyway, what're everyone's thoughts on this?

Man I really hope this all pans out well. Been waiting for another Timesplitters. Hope they keep all the same sensibilities. Such fun games.

Is that really the ONLY thing you can think of saying about this? Wow...

So, Timesplitters 4. I really hope it's like the older ones. They don't need to change the style, at ALL. Keep the art style, gameplay, and humor and all that stuff. Just give it a graphical update and some tweaks.

As long as it's done well, similar to 2 I think, this is some of the best news I've heard in a long time :D Some of my best days on the PS2 were spent playing that.

Yeah, like THAT WILL HAPPEN.

Here comes another hp regen 2 gun super slow boring ass fps.

I miss old school fps, but apparently i'm in the minority here.

Did you not have friends to play any of the previous games with? Time Splitters was always a freakin' blast, dude.

Heh. I though TS4 was old news, but cool. The next generation isn't due till about 2015 at the moment, so unless this changes we'll probably be waiting a while. Crysis 2 was awesome, and if they can implement a better graphics engine by then, I don't see why it won't end up being the most beautiful game of the generation. Plus TimeSplitters is just naturally brilliant anyway.

Could be great.

And the reason why games are getting more expensive is mainly due to graphics I think. It's got nothing to do with originality. Originality is free, after all.

Sorry - what is Timesplitters? Never heard of it :/

Essentially, its one of the best console games ever made(For me, they're the best games ever made. Ever).

The story is about these things called Timesplitters, who attack humanity by screwing with it's past, and you gots to stop them. The story is fun to play, and pretty funny. It's also co-op, which is awesome.

The multiplayer is easily the best ever. It gives you quite a bit of customization options, and quite a lot of modes and maps to play. And there's bots(AI opponents). Let me tell you, these are some of the most fun bots to play with. Thanks to Timesplitter's roster of over 150 characters(not kidding), you can fight with a huge-ass variety of bots. It's also 4-player split screen, which is some of the most fun ever.

The games also come with a Mapmaker. This mapmaker is the best I've ever used. Easy enough to figure out, deep enough to make whole story missions. And all the bot's AI work on all user-made maps, which is a pretty big technological achievement.

Timesplitters is essentially the embodiment of "pure fun". If you can, I suggest buying the games. They're well worth your time. They're only available for the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube though. I suggest the PS2 versions.

But originality doesn't sell that well.

Otherwise Psychonauts would have made craploads of money. Since budgets are getting higher, and more original games have a habit of not selling so great, its more profitable to go with what the most popular guy is going with.

Oh yeah I totally misunderstood your post then. Most FPS games do suck. I mean that's basically what every developer is cranking out right now, they can't all be good. Personally I'm partial to Halo Reach and the Jedi Knight series, sadly the Jedi games are all but dead.

Well if they did bring out a new Jedi Knight game, I'm sure they'd find a way to make it suck too.

I'm not sure if it is just nostalgia or whatever, but it seems like every reboot/sequel/prequel of a game I love is a terrible terrible game, or at least so unlike the original it only shares a name in some flimsy attempt to cash in on its predecessors success.

Man, sequels make a bitter angry person these days.

If it is anything like the other games (with Future Perfect being my favorite) I will love it and play it for hours. Future Perfect is one of the reasons I didn't try to sell my PS2 after buying a 360. Damn that game never stops being funny!

Optimizations are the money hog, and the most time consuming. Yes, dumbing down the sexy visuals is actually what takes the most time. Removing polygons, cleaning up models, cutting down on AI and physics computations, making textures lower resolutions, then having to tweak them to look just as good as the hi resolutions versions... The next generation of consoels could very well make games cheaper to make.

It doesnt take more time to do something like ...say...block out a walrus. then split it and round it off, add wrinkles then texture the ***** and throw it in game, than say, blocking it out, splitting faces, creating deep wrinkles in polygons, smoothing it all, correcting edge flow, then adding more polygons, then snapshotting it, and applying the details as a normal map on a low poly model (more than a third of the polys lets say) tweak the normals to get the lighting correct on the wrinkles, and then fitting the texture to the normal map...

It's a process. >.> that we can avoid.

Makes sense. But when you realize that the community can do that relatively easily, it kind of puts things in perspective.

If I could use Oblivion as an example(because that game is so poorly optimized its fucking ridiculous), there are plenty of mods(small ones at that) that drastically improve performance.

Perhaps if it's such a money sink, maybe going with super-awesome graphics in the first place isn't the best idea.
