So, I work at a job where I make tips, and actually rely on them to help pay bills(since my pay is absolute shit). So whenever a customer gives me a tip, whether its $.75 or a couple of bucks, I'm always grateful, give them a smile and a "Thanks, have a nice day." Whenever I go out to a restaurant, order food delivery, get my haircut, or having coffee made for me, I'm always giving tips, cause I know people can be in the same situation I'm in so I feel like I can be helping out(also showing gratitude).

But a few people in my family NEVER tip, and I mean never ever, not even a delivery boy. They're just fucking cheap and I can't understand why.

If a person is struggling with money, then I can see why they might not want to tip. But otherwise, is showing a little gratitude too much to ask?

So, what are your opinions on tipping?

Why should I dish out my hard earned cash made from restocking shelves in a local supermarket (I'm just a teenager) to pay when I already have to pay? If the guy who brings me delicious pizzas is nice, and worthy, I might tip.
I don't see tipping as a necessity. if you can't make enough from your job, switch to another better paying job. Also, tipping a hairdresser? I find that odd. They don't need costly supplies or anything, just a pair of scissors and a comb. perhaps some buzzers or something. Those people (here anyway) are expensive enough already. (20 bucks for removing some hair, it takes 10 minutes! That makes 120 bucks an hour on a busy day! I don't always make that monthly!)

Also, some people (at least some /b/tards) are very rude if you don't tip. They spit in your food or deliver it cold. Some guy even saved his "manjuice" to put in people's food! I think tipping is dangerous for other's health.

I'll tip a delivery boy, or at a restaurant with a good waiter. I have been to restaurants, and even on days when it wasn't busy, after we got our food, we were NEVER cared for after. We never were asked for refills or even given the bill. We had to go to the cash desk and he rung up our bill. I certainly didn't tip there, I'm not going to tip someone who chats in the back. When people do a good job at what they do, though, I tip them. I was at a restaurant that had excellent foot, the waiter was really nice and always checked on us and he had this habit of calling me "boss", and that made me feel great for some reason. I loved how he did that. I think my individual bill was like $30 or $40 or something (pretty pricey place) and I tipped him $15 because he gave us excellent service. That general rule of thumb for a restaurant is 15% of your bill is what you give as a tip. I gave way more than that because he was such an awesome server.

So in answer, I tip when they deserve it. Delivery people, I tip every time because in most cases that's a large part of their pay. I've never left a tip in the tip jar at a coffee shop, I do appreciate their service but I generally don't get frappuccino's or complex drinks, I typically just get a coffee so I don't really see that item as tippable (not really a word...).

Sometimes people simply don't understand what a tip can mean to someone on the receiving end of a tip. I find it weird when people go to a more high scale restaurant and then act too stingy to tip. Really? You're going to pay $40 for your meal, get great service, and then not tip? Fortunately none of my friends do this, but I've seen it done and it sucks.

Im from the us. thats going to be relevant through the post.

I beleive in tipping. Most waiter/tresses make less then minimum wage. or at least thats the rumor. I know a few of the ones I know make less then it. Not significantly like the 3 dollar people say, but they make about a dollar and some change less. Plus its just generally a nice thing, to show you appreciated the meal, and it encourages positive behavior.

Plus, my uncles usually will right it off as charitable donations ont heir taxes, and they get away with it. but tehy eat out a lot, or order in, so it makes it worth while.

However, as has been voiced here before in topics like this, in other countries (mostly the vocal ones are from the EU) have the tip written into their bill, so tehy dont tip. So it may just be a cultural thing.

I don't like tips. I think that every place should start all employees at minimum. Any tips go directly to the business, which then splits the total earned that night (or shift) between every employee that worked there. This includes dishwashers and such.

I do tip, however. I just never know how much and always end up over-tipping...

Because its just so fucking simple, right? Trust me, I tried looking, but places are either not hiring, or they just won't give me enough hours.

Very well put.

Thats a nice idea, but a lot employers just love deducting tips off of their employees paychecks. Saves them money, but it generally screws over the employee.

I've seen it attempted, but the problem always comes down to whoever counts the tip jar pocketing more than their share, shorting everyone else.

If people weren't such greedy bastards sometimes, there wouldn't be this problem at all.

EDIT: And the idea that waiters/waitresses should get paid less because they make tons on tips is motherfucking bullshit, and I've never even worked in such a job before. It sounds horrid.
And along with being paid less than minimum wage, they also do some back breaking work. Being a waiter is a difficult job and the job itself is very unstable considering the amount of tips received can vary rapidly. It can be a good job if you really know what you're doing and how to please people, but otherwise it's one of the most shittiest jobs you can have.

Thanking someone for doing their job is gratitude enough for me. It's too bad if they don't earn enough, but I've been raised over here in the UK and I've never once seen someone tip a delivery man or waiter. I have tipped once though, when my fiancée and I stopped at a hotel I left our waiter a 10% tip (of a £50 odd bill), but he provided exceptional service and was very entertaining; even giving us a complimentary glass of Champagne when I proposed.

I've heard however that wages for waiting staff in the US are diabolical and some rely on tips to survive, so I guess it depends where you live and what you've grown up with. However I will say that I am adamantly opposed to compulsory tips, because they aren't tips at all. When my uncle booked his cruise he was asked if he'd like to pay his gratuities upfront or actually on the cruise. If he paid upfront it was about $200.

Tipping is abhorrent. It is a system created by people accepting pay which is to low for them to live off, and companies exploiting that.

Do the job, get the pay. The idea that someone should get paid less than they need to live by their employer is, frankly, abusive and disgusting. You shouldn't need tips, if anything they should be a nice bonus, not something you need to live.

I do not, cannot, understand why employees in other parts of the world except this stupidity. People should be paid a fair wage for a day's work, not need to live off the kindness of others.

Tipping, if it needs to exist at all, should be restricted to a voluntary bonus for exceptional service, not something people are required to give or the person serving them cannot eat.

Tipping is supposed to be an extra reward for a job well done, if I feel that a person has done well and deserves something then I will tip. I wont simply tip because it's obligatory, that's not how it works.

If they do something extra, even a little, I'm willing to pay a tip. Otherwise... Why?
This! This entirely! I don't do it as standard, but people that are extra friendly, or the delivery boy or taxi-driver coming out at 4AM to give food to or pick up us drunks, yeah I'll give them a couple of quid.

I dislike the way America assumes people in the service sector are going to get tips and counts them as a standard part of wages. People should just be paid an appropriate wage in the first place and tipping should only be a little extra when the customer feels you've done an exceptional job. It should never be expected or assumed.
