The sausage represents a penis. I finally got that!!!
Another nice kids movie featuring things that don't normally talk talking. A tried and true film making style made huge by Pixar and now we get one from a little company no one has ever heard of. Wait, the sausage represents what? Oh....oh my.....
Sausage Party involves a lot of talking food but this is not a cute little movie about inanimate objects teaching children friendship or family values or whatnot; this is one of the raunchiest movies I think I've seen. Do not be fooled by the talking food; your kids should be kept far, far, FAR away.
The food in Sausage Party are all at a generic grocery store known as Shopwell. The food believes that they are kept in the store until the Gods choose to take them to The Great Beyond. As long as the food follows their strict moral code, they will be chosen to go to The Great Beyond and live happily ever after.
Our primary characters are a couple of sausages named Frank (Seth Rogen), Barry (Michael Cera), and Frank's crush the bun Brenda (Kristen Wiig). Frank and Brenda love each other and Frank can't wait to get inside Brenda (get it!?!?). They get chosen to go to The Great Beyond but a complication occurs that causes Frank and Brenda to fall out of the cart while Barry goes to The Great Beyond. Frank and Brenda join up with a Lavash (David Krumholtz) and a Jewish Bagel (Edward Norton) to try to get back to the shelf so that they can go to the Great Beyond. However, Frank is given reason to doubt that The Great Beyond exists and searches out to find out if The Great Beyond and the so-called Gods are anything except fairytales told to comfort and placate the food. Throughout the movie, they are chased by a Douche (Nick Kroll) that gets damaged during the complication. Also, that's not a colorful use of language on my part; the bad guy is actually a Douche. Meanwhile, Barry gets to learn what The Great Beyond truly is...
In case it's not obvious enough, the story is a giant allegory for religion. The Lavash and the Jewish Bagel hate each other because both are taking the aisle that they both claim they own, Frank is questioning whether The Great Beyond is real while Brenda is questioning whether they sinned earlier in the film when she and Frank put "just the tip" in and therefore the Gods rejected them going to The Great Beyond. A movie that could have gotten away with just being another raunchy sex movie in line with other Rogen vehicles like Knocked Up tells a reasonably smart and witty story about discovery and questioning. Don't let that trick you though; the comedy is super dumb (the good kind of dumb assuming you like that kind of comedy; see "Sausage and Bun" joke) and filled with food puns that will make the Dad's in the audience beam with pride.
Somehow, everything works incredibly well. The jokes are pretty constant. While not all of them fully land, most everything the movie does is at least chuckle worthy and there are at least a handful of full on gut laughs. Whether it is just the absurdity of what is happening, a groan inducing pun, or just the weird sadistic glee one gets when the food panics about seeing each other get "murdered" by the Gods, the movie is hilarious.
With that though, the movie is also a lot smarter than it probably needs to be with Frank's quest to determine if religion is a good or bad thing. While there are bound to be people who hate the movie because of how much religion gets ripped, it feels very clever and entertaining and usually isn't just religion bashing for religion bashing's sake.
Do you enjoy other Seth Rogen adult humor movies (Knocked Up, Neighbors, The Interview, Zack and Miri Make a Porno)? Whatever your answer to that is answers "Should I go see this movie?". While this movie is a bit smarter than some of his other comedies, this is still a Seth Rogen comedy and the jokes all reflect that. Since I love me some Seth Rogen, I love me some Sausage Party (no Mom, I AM just referring to the movies name, you can stop asking).
8.5/10; A smart and hilarious movie that is destined for cult classic, if not regular classic.
