I was listening to the BBC radio but turned it up and heard a discussion with a developer at Sega who said "3D is the future of gaming."

First off, it won't be because it is a pointless gimmick.
Secondly, I AM FUCKING TIRED OF HEARING THIS FROM GAME DEVELOPERS.
I know they are getting money to implement 3D, but it is useless.

I know, right? Who needs all those fancy "polygons" and "3-Dimensional environments" and such, eh? No one, that's who. I tell you, if developers continue to concentrate on this new fangled "3D" business, the industry will go down the toilet even more than it has.

Well I have this tendency to ignore 3D since I usually game with an audience of 2 or 3 people who I am either gaming with on the same server or simply are bored and want to watch me game during shared free times in my schedule.

Yeah touch screen is really coming into play, with the Vita as well. Combine those two and that will be like playing the Witcher 2 with your feet. I'm starting to think 3D and touch screen will stick around for a while...
Also the fact I've never seen a good 3D game. 3D GT5 was god awful and looked worse in 3D, as well as Killzone 3.

i love 3d tvs because they drive down the cost of non-3d tvs

all i can say is just learn to ride the wave. 3D gaming is a fad just like the fad back in the day was virtual reality where you put on a helmet or stepped into a platform and you WERE the character. it will die, touch screens will become the new fad, then it will die and something else will replace it, and this will continue on forever in the same pattern. its a cycle, new technology is made that seems to fit with gaming and then after a few years of poor implementation people realize that it is not very feasible and that it doesnt add anything to the experience (and in some cases actually worsens it)

3D is just a gimmick. It's just a middle step before the next big thing.

The future of gaming is virtual reality.

I don't know if it's going to be goggles you put on, or something you plug into your head.

Companies have been playing with VR for a long time now. Pretty soon the technology will be powerful to make it look realistic.

Instead of focusing on making every movie and game in 3D, they should focus on making a good story, good gameplay or developing something new for a change.

I don't see the problem.
Nobody is forcing you to buy a 3dTV or a 3ds. The vast majority are still happy with their ordinary screens. Even if every game out there supported 3d mode, you could still play competitively on a normal flatscreen.

Touch screen doesn't even come into it. You cannot play fast action games with a touch screen interface, so buttons and analogue sticks aren't going away anytime soon.

^And this.

All 3D does for me is give me massive headaches. I saw a thread, can't remember if it was on The Escapist or somewhere else that talked about "2D glasses" that turn 3D movies back into 2D. If I had access I would quite possibly buy them. Cannot stand 3D.

Stereoscopic 3D isn't the future of gaming, it's just the easiest thing they can do that's "new". Visuals have long been the focus of the industry, often to the detriment of everything else, because it's the easiest way to market a game.

Stereoscopic 3D is a good additional to previously existing games; my 3DS is played daily, and I love it. However, I don't have to wear glasses and I also like that I have a slider than can turn it down or off.
If they could replicate this - shouldn't be too hard to do, most PC Gamers sit stationary at their playing surface of choice - I'd happily buy more 3D enabled games.

3D has always been in a constant cycle of being the next-best-thing, dying down after everyone's bored of it, and then picking up again after several years. Take a look at this timeline:
